In a statement released today, coinciding with #WorldHumanitarianDay, which falls on August 19 each year, Mwatana for Human Rights reported that since October 7, #Israeli forces have systematically targeted humanitarian operations in #Gaza, resulting in the deliberate and unjustified killing of at least 270 humanitarian workers. These attacks have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and hindered efforts to alleviate the suffering of the population. The use of starvation as a weapon of war starkly reflects a blatant disregard for human rights and laws that prohibit attacks on humanitarian facilities. For More: bit.ly/3WT5jDL

#SUDAN - The world's largest #HumanitarianCrisis Indiscriminate violence, massacres, torture, systematic looting, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), bombing of civilian infrastructure, cutting off essential services and obstructing humanitarian aid: this has been the daily reality for thousands of civilians for over a year. According to the latest report of the UN Fact Finding Mission for Sudan, rape and sexual violence are widely used as weapons of war by the parties to the conflict. More than 10.7 million people have been displaced, 2.1 million have fled to neighbouring countries, and half the population (25.6 million) is suffering from hunger and is in urgent need of humanitarian aid. The official death toll is 26,000 in Khartoum state alone, but recent estimates put the figure at 66,000. On #WorldHumanitarianDay, let's also recognize the critical role of military forces in defending human rights and protecting humanitarian workers. As defenders of peace and security, they must uphold international humanitarian law, ensuring the safety of civilians and those who risk their lives to provide aid. It's time to demand accountability from all involved in conflicts and work together to end impunity. The protection of humanitarians and civilians must be a priority in every conflict zone. #CitizensInUniform
On #WorldHumanitarianDay, I join everyone saluting humanitarians for their courage, determination, and service to humanity. But honouring aid workers is not enough. 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian personnel. In Gaza, in Sudan, and in many other places, humanitarian workers are being attacked, killed, injured, and abducted, alongside the civilians they support. International humanitarian law – the law that protects civilians during wartime – is being ignored and trampled. We demand an end to attacks on humanitarians and on all civilians. We demand that governments put pressure on all those involved in conflict to protect civilians. We demand an end to arms transfers to armies and groups that violate international law. We demand an end to impunity, so that perpetrators face justice.

World Humanitarian Day is indeed a moment to honor the resilience and determination of those facing severe war conditions in Sudan. It’s a time to recognize the ongoing struggles and to advocate for a future where basic human needs are met and respected. Celebrating this day helps bring attention to the efforts needed to improve conditions and support those affected by conflict and adversity. #WorldHumanitarianDay

Gaza one year on: European Union and its Member States should take decisive diplomatic action to ensure the protection of civilians, uphold International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and guarantee unimpeded humanitarian access in Gaza. The time to act is now!
📢Almost a year after the escalation of violence in #Gaza, the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, with devastating consequences for civilians. Since October 2023, over 41,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, including more than 11,000 children, and the situation is rapidly deteriorating in the region. Humanitarian workers are also at risk, with more than 280 having been killed while trying to provide aid to those in need. The obstruction of #humanitarian access has left over two million people without essential supplies like food, water, and healthcare. As the leading European network of humanitarian #NGOs, VOICE calls on the European Union and its Member States to take decisive diplomatic action to ensure the protection of civilians, uphold International Humanitarian Law (#IHL), and guarantee unimpeded humanitarian access in Gaza. The time to act is now! 🔽Read our full statement here

Today 19 August is #WorldHumanitarianDay, and this year we specifically put the spotlight on humanitarian workers and civilians being attacked in wartime, despite international humanitarian law #IHL being meant to protect us. 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian personnel, and this sad trend is not likely to improve this year. Across Gaza, Sudan, the DRC, Ukraine and dozens other devastating and violent conflicts, humanitarians continue to be targeted, alongside children, young people and their families. The world is failing humanitarian workers and, by extension, the people they serve. They are #notatarget. We must #actforhumanity now to: - end attacks on humanitarian workers and on all civilians - ensure there is accountability for violating IHL

Today’s alarming Human Rights Watch report sets out how Israeli authorities have deliberately caused massive, forced displacement of civilians in #Gaza and says they are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The report also underlines the horrors that children continue to face in Gaza, with the cutting off of aid and resources ‘leading to a humanitarian crisis where children are now dying from starvation.’ This unacceptable obstruction of humanitarian access and the targeting of humanitarian aid and workers in Gaza must end immediately, including a reversal on the cruel ban on UNRWA delivering life-saving aid to Palestinians. There is currently no safe place for Gazan children, with many children and their families displaced numerous times and experiencing catastrophic living conditions. Every day that passes means more children killed and injured, more children experiencing extreme hunger, and more children facing indescribable trauma. For the good of all civilians, this impunity must end. Governments, including the UK Government, must urgently step up their diplomatic pressure on Israel – including through ending all arms sales – and demand an immediate #CeasefireNow.

𝑼𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝑹𝒂𝒇𝒂𝒉 (#Gaza) 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: The lives of 2.3 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip are under severe threat. They face the dangers of death, injury, and the collapse of essential infrastructure due to ongoing conflict situations. 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: • Potential Military Actions: The possible incursion into Rafah could exacerbate an already disastrous humanitarian situation 🚩🚩🚩 • Humanitarian Challenges: Hospitals are under-supplied and overwhelmed, with severe restrictions on access to vital services. Even accessing aid has become perilous 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆: • The Rafah military incursion is not inevitable • The Protection Cluster for the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the Global Protection Cluster emphasize that the protection of civilians, including children, must remain the highest priority • We advocate for an immediate and permanent ceasefire as the only viable solution to prevent further suffering and casualties among Gaza's civilians. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: • According to international humanitarian law and directives from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the government of Israel must implement strategies that minimize civilian harm, including to children. • We urge an immediate halt to attacks on Rafah and other areas where civilians are most vulnerable 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: • We demand a significant increase in humanitarian access to Gaza, especially through land crossings, to ensure aid can reach those in desperate need throughout the Strip. #ChildProtection For further details, please read our full statement here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZvFhB6Z

“Most of the children in Rafah have already been displaced multiple times by the fighting in Gaza, in direct contravention of international law. We know that as the war enters its 20th week many are injured, sick and malnourished and will struggle to find the wherewithal to move yet again. We estimate that at least 17,000 children in Gaza are now unaccompanied or have become separated from their families, a number that would surely increase in the event of further population displacement. It is imperative to refrain from further military escalation in and around Rafah and to ensure that all hostages still inside Gaza are urgently and safely released. If the parties do not heed this call, they will be responsible for the deaths of many more children, in addition to the thousands who have already perished. Parties to the conflict should urgently implement a permanent humanitarian ceasefire so that our group and other humanitarian agencies can help to roll out the massive, multi-agency operation that is so desperately needed. I strongly urge the authorities to allow more aid trucks through border checks, to lift restrictions on the movement of humanitarian workers, and to guarantee safety for people accessing and distributing aid. The destruction of Gaza and killing of civilians will not bring peace or safety to the region. That can only be achieved with a negotiated political solution, one that prioritizes the rights and well-being of this and future generations of Israeli and Palestinian children."
