Mwatana for Human Rights welcomed the United Nations' receipt of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in #Yemen's capital, Sana'a, on Monday, August 19, 2024, which coincides with #WorldHumanitarianDay in the presence of the #UN Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Coordinator in Yemen, Julien Harneis, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Jamal Amer . This step is intended to pave the way for the Office to resume its work in promoting human rights in Yemen. Mwatana commended all constructive efforts aimed at resolving the challenges faced by humanitarian institutions. Mwatana also called for building on this development by releasing detained members of the High Commissioner’s team and representatives of international and local organizations, and by lifting all restrictions on the activities of the High Commissioner’s Office and humanitarian, developmental, and human rights organizations.

In a statement released today, coinciding with #WorldHumanitarianDay, which falls on August 19 each year, Mwatana for Human Rights reported that since October 7, #Israeli forces have systematically targeted humanitarian operations in #Gaza, resulting in the deliberate and unjustified killing of at least 270 humanitarian workers. These attacks have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and hindered efforts to alleviate the suffering of the population. The use of starvation as a weapon of war starkly reflects a blatant disregard for human rights and laws that prohibit attacks on humanitarian facilities. For More: bit.ly/3WT5jDL

"It is deeply saddening that #WorldHumanitarianDay2024 arrives while more than 35 employees of both local and international humanitarian organizations, as well as current and former staff of foreign diplomatic missions, remain in arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance by the Ansar Allah (#Houthi) group, following an unprecedented wave of arrests that began on May 31, 2024." On the occasion of #WorldHumanitarianDay2024, observed annually on August 19th, Mwatana for Human Rights has called for the immediate release of humanitarian workers who have been unlawfully detained for nearly three months by the Ansar Allah (#Houthi) group. The organization also urged all parties to the conflict to lift the restrictions imposed on the operations of humanitarian organizations and workers, who have been increasingly constrained and targeted. Mwatana emphasized that the critical role of humanitarian work in alleviating—albeit partially—the severe suffering in Yemen cannot be ignored. After more than nine years of armed conflict, humanitarian assistance remains an indispensable lifeline for millions of Yemenis, especially given the immense challenges the country is currently facing, which demand more robust humanitarian, relief, developmental, and human rights efforts. Mwatana noted that the #Israeli army committed its latest massacre in tandem with the announcement by the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden of the release of $3.5 billion in funds to #Israel for the purchase of #weapons and equipment to commit more #crimes against Palestinian women and children in the #Gaza Strip and the #West_Bank, in a provocative challenge to human conscience, international will, and the free world. Mwatana for Human Rights asserted that #Israel continues to defy the global conscience, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court by committing further horrific massacres against Palestinian civilians seeking refuge in facilities operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (#UNRWA). These actions reveal the international community's weakness in the face of Israel and its complicity in genocide, war crimes, and #crimes against humanity that have afflicted the Palestinian people for over nine months. The latest appalling Israeli attacks, along with the daily massacres intentionally carried out by the Israeli army against civilians in the Gaza Strip, leave no doubt about the current Israeli government's—led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ministers—determination to continue its genocidal war against Palestinian civilians, resulting in 39,000 deaths so far, most of whom are women and children. Mwatana has consistently learned that the work of public benefit organizations is not governed by personal opinions, impressions, or moods, nor by campaigns, regardless of their scale, nor by propaganda—whether white or black, for or against—but by established evaluation and audit mechanisms. These mechanisms set aside individual sentiments of satisfaction or dissatisfaction, love or hate, praise or criticism, admiration or defamation, acceptance or rejection, and adhere to the outcomes of evaluation and audit processes based on highly precise and fair methodologies. Therefore, Mwatana has focused its efforts on ensuring the quality, accuracy, and integrity of its mechanisms, processes, and activities. As a result, the outcomes of our annual, periodic, routine, unexpected, and exceptional evaluations and audits have always been accurate, fair, and just, standing in stark contrast to the content of visible and hidden defamation and fabrication campaigns. In the first half of 2024, various aspects of Mwatana’s work underwent thorough and comprehensive audits and evaluations conducted by specialized and independent international auditing bodies. Mwatana’s teams across all units and departments engaged with these processes with openness, positivity, and gratitude, rooted in our firm belief in the value of independent audits and evaluations. We recognize the critical role these processes play in identifying shortcomings, addressing them, preventing their recurrence, improving the quality of our work, ensuring its sustainability, and enhancing its positive impact on victims and causes.
