My first #TEDx talk! Last month, I had the opportunity to speak at #TEDxYouth in Haileybury Astana! Preparing for the speech was a rollercoaster of emotions - from excitement to anxiety, and dealing with imposter syndrome. But I’m glad that I did it! The theme “Lasting Impact” prompted me to reflect on how I could inspire the younger generation through my passion for writing. So I talked of something that I feel we, as journalists, sometimes forget, which is writing with compassion and writing from an equal stance with a reader rather than from a top-down perspective. That is my approach to writing when big numbers just aren't enough. My speech was imperfect, but it reflects something that I truly believe in as a journalist and a writer. Thanks, Haileybury Astana, for inviting me!

My professor was legendary broadcaster, Marlene Sanders. She helped me hone and own the delivery of my copy. It helped improve my broadcasting AND writing... Effectively delivering information is as much physical as it is language, and in virtual conversations, people can tense up. It's hard to connect over a screen. Whether you need to convey something delicate or stand out to a leader, use use your whole toolbox: 👉 Face 👉 Shoulders 👉 Hands 👉 Voice Owning your tone and timbre can help you communicate clearly, garner trust, and assert authority. Try it. Apply it. 🎤 New York University #jorunalism #presentationskills #publicspeakingtips

Agar Tumhara Time Important hai toh dusro ka time bhi important hai. We all make the same mistake and that mistake is we do not give respect to other people's time. One of my friends was a great writer. But he made a mistake. When he got work and people liked him, he stopped caring about them and their time. Later, people stopped giving him work because he didn't value them. Now, he feels really bad about it. He wishes he had been kind to people. So, let's always remember that people's time is important. When we value others, they will value us too. If we don't, they might forget us. People are important, and their precious time is also important, so we should respect it. 🚀 Meet John, a writer who wasn't feeling particularly inspired one day. Faced with his lack of motivation, he asked himself: Who will write it for me if I don’t? Instead of giving in, Josh took action. Here's what he did: - He submitted his work to the International Press Association despite his doubts. - He remained patient and optimistic during the three-week wait. His perseverance paid off! 📄 Josh received a reply stating his work was accepted, and he was welcomed aboard the International Press Association. Ever faced that inner struggle to start or complete a project? How did you overcome it? Share your experiences below! 👇 #Productivity #WritingCommunity #Perseverance #BusinessSuccess #InspirationalStories #TakeAction

Sharing my story during my TEDx talk, “A Broken Body Isn’t a Broken Person,” was more than just a presentation—it was a transformative act of courage. Preparing for the talk wasn’t just about writing; it was about reauthoring my narrative, much like the Hero’s Journey. While writing helped me see the patterns of my experiences, speaking my truth brought those insights to life profoundly. The takeaway? Our stories hold immense power, but it’s in sharing them aloud that we connect the dots of our journey, find more profound clarity, and inspire others. Don’t be afraid to use your voice—whether on a stage, in a meeting, or a conversation. Your story can be the bridge that connects, heals, and transforms—not just for you but for everyone who hears it. #courage #motivationalspeaker #janineshepherd #tedxkc #resilience

What if every word you write held a deeper purpose? This week's lesson is all about #intentionality. Have you ever stopped to think about the purpose behind your communication? As communicators, we should always be intentional with our message. This reminds of last semester when we had a special lecture with Mr. Malik Afegbua, a renowned creative technologist, thanks to Funmi Akinsola Unuajefe. He delivered an inspiring talk on "intentional storytelling" as African communicators. This concept applies to everything we create, from written content and illustrations to films and videos. Every word in our writing, every stroke in our sketches, every clip and sequence in our films – all these elements should contribute to a larger and intentional narrative - Africans telling the African story the African way. So think about the message you want to convey next time you create something. How can you use intentionality to tell a stronger and impactful story? #AfricanStorytelling #IntentionalCommunication #MassComm #lesson4

If you are a writer or director, you've probably hit a wall at some point. I know I have, many times. And I’m not done hitting them. Sometimes it’s a struggle with story structure, or the plot is solid, but there isn’t enough feeling in the scenes. Or it’s struggling to complete a project or to start a daily writing practice or figure out how to communicate more effectively with collaborators or actors or producers. Whatever the struggle, it’s even harder when you feel like you have to figure it out by yourself. That’s how I've often felt. That’s part of what led me to creative consulting and coaching: it’s a form of support I rely on, and it’s made a huge difference for me over the years. I help writers and directors wherever they are stuck or want to grow. I draw on training and experience in different fields to tailor an approach that works for the individual I’m working with. And when I’m not the right fit, I say so, and help find someone better suited. If you want to learn more, drop me a line here or use the form on my website. I usually start with a short, free consultation to see if we’re a good fit. https://lnkd.in/et9CnWEb
