🌊 Friday Feature: Technology Needs for Scientifically Robust Wildlife Monitoring and Adaptive Management 🌊 NOWRDC is proud to share that Worley has completed the project, “Technology Needs for Scientifically Robust Wildlife Monitoring and Adaptive Management.” This project addressed key technological requirements to support offshore wind energy in achieving scientifically rigorous, question-driven wildlife monitoring. By focusing on the integration of monitoring technologies for birds and marine mammals, this project aims to inform mitigation and adaptive management decisions, ultimately reducing market barriers to responsible offshore wind development. Project Highlights: 🔹 Examined technologies for monitoring marine mammals and birds for a variety of purposes such as site characterization, risk assessment, active mitigation, and long-term impact assessment with a particular focus on long-term monitoring. 🔹 Informed technology development relative to achieving statistically robust studies that can meaningfully inform mitigation and adaptive management for the effects of offshore wind energy development on birds and marine mammals. 🔹 Identified urgent technology development needs where resources could be directed to most effectively reduce market barriers to development. The Need: Prior to this project, there was no comprehensive synthesis of technologies capable of collecting robust wildlife data that could effectively inform adaptive management in offshore wind. Likewise, there was no comprehensive evaluation of the capacity of monitoring technologies to be integrated into normal operations and maintenance of wind farms. This project bridges that gap, offering crucial insights to ensure monitoring efforts are efficient, meaningful, and actionable. 📄 Results Now Published: Check out the full publication in the MTS Journal here: https://lnkd.in/eDd8ai2Q For more details, including workshop summaries and final reports, visit their project overview: https://lnkd.in/ejsZfzca Sarah Courbis #OffshoreWind #WildlifeMonitoring #AdaptiveManagement #MarineMammals #RenewableEnergy #WorleyConsulting

Congratulations to Formosa 6 for passing the EIA! SRE's first offshore wind power project in central Taiwan, Formosa 6, has successfully cleared its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) today. This marks a significant milestone in its development phase and promises substantial benefits for the local community, the environment, and the renewable energy sector. 1. Local Community:Increased job opportunities and economic growth. 2. Environment: Reduced carbon footprint and sustainable energy production. 3. Renewable Energy Sector: Enhanced development and investment in clean energy projects.
Congratulations to Formosa 6 for passing EIA! SRE's first offshore wind power project in central Taiwan, Formosa 6, has cleared its EIA today, marking a significant milestone in the development phase. Whether in Miaoli, where we have established a strong foothold, or in Changhua, where we are venturing into for the first time with Formosa 6 and Formosa 7, we always put environmental protection and shared prosperity at the heart of our endeavors. Our active commitment to ecological protection, environmental monitoring, and engineering designs with minimal environmental impact clearly shows how much we care. SRE, besides pioneering offshore wind development in Taiwan, has sponsored the “Analysis of Cetacean Stranding Pattern in Taiwan and Live Stranding Rescue Enhancement Project” led by a research team from the School of Veterinary Medicine at National Taiwan University, marking an industry first. Through this project, we aim to enhance understanding of cetaceans in Taiwanese waters and establish a more constructive conservation and response plan. Step by step, SRE is advancing toward a sustainable future!

📣 Calling innovators who can offer solutions to improve the ability to monitor and capture ecology data in the marine environment either during development or operation of an offshore wind farm. 🪸 One of the key barriers to acquiring offshore wind farm consent conditions is lack of data on specific environmental impacts. OW Ocean Winds is in a rare position to conduct monitoring on offshore wind farms both during the development/construction phase and the operational phase. Innovate UK is supporting Ocean Winds in seeking solutions that provide a one-stop-shop piece of equipment/technology that can be used to add additional monitoring capability of various environmental receptors specifically below water surface where species monitoring is more difficult. The innovative aspect of this solution is the requirement for multiple data collection methods on one piece or a grouping of equipment. Successful applicants will be given the opportunity to pitch to Ocean Winds. Selected solutions may be trialled by Ocean Winds with potential for further adoption if trials are successful. 🚨 The challenge closes on 8 November. Work and personal lives coming together in unexpected ways. A few birding and conservation groups I am active with did some interesting work this summer with Prothonotary Warblers, small, bright yellow birds of lake and stream edges, marshes and swamps. Attaching geo-locators to the birds, they hoped to better understand migration and breeding patterns of the birds. Turns out they are also using the data to improve siting of energy facilities. I guess I can reclassify that day off I took to observe this process as professional learning? https://lnkd.in/gFDSstZs

As Australia is moving quickly to ocean renewables it is important to have honest conversations whilst building relationships with a diversity of stakeholders. Whales have co-existed with so many human activities - some much more harmful than others. The most recent politicisation of the renewable vs conservation debate to migrate across the pacific to our shores has inspired misinformation as much as it has called for honest dialogues around what we do know and where our knowledge gaps lie. This is a wonderful article from where to start this true and honest conversation with our stakeholders #whales #oceanrenewables #communityengagement #buildingrelationships #honestconveesations #bluevsblue

Tomorrow, June 15th is Global Wind Day, bringing awareness to wind power, a renewable energy resource that is rapidly growing. As one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels, wind power offers a sustainable solution to our energy needs while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As the nation moves towards its renewable energy goals, understanding and leveraging the strengths of both onshore and offshore wind will be crucial. The combined efforts in these sectors will not only help reduce carbon emissions but also create jobs, spur technological innovation, and enhance energy security. Great Ecology can assist with several components of wind energy projects, learn more about what we do in our latest blog by Jessica Druze, WPIT here: https://lnkd.in/g7ZN53ZF #GlobalWindDay #RenewableEnergy #EnvironmentalPlanning #Restoration #Mitigation #Monitoring #Surveying #EcologicalConsulting
