Communication is a two-way street, if you suffer from hearing loss here are some tips for making life easier when communicating with others: • If you need to, ask the speaker to go more slowly and clearly. • Don’t be embarrassed – tell the person you’re speaking to that you have difficulty hearing. • Make sure you aren’t standing too far away to see the speaker clearly: gestures and expressions can help with understanding. • Ask people to catch your attention before they launch into a speech. • If you hear better with one ear than the other, position yourself to benefit from your good side. • Try and stay relaxed – if you start feeling stressed about hearing, it will become more difficult. • Nobody hears perfectly all the time, so don’t feel bad about asking the other person to repeat what they said, or say it another way. Hearing is vital to communicate with others and experience fulfilling relationships. Hearing loss can influence communication and negatively affect social interactions. Hearing loss is associated with social isolation and loneliness. However, when individuals prioritize their hearing health, they’re likely to stay connected to others and remain engaged in their daily activities. How many people do you interact with on daily basis? Think beyond your immediate circle and consider the individuals you may have an encounter with at the coffee shop, the grocery store, the gas station, at the local hockey rink, etc. It’s important to stay connected and be proactive with your hearing health, to maintain strong connections within your immediate circle and greater community. If you’ve struggled to communicate with others, it may be time to book your diagnostic audiological assessment to better understand your hearing status. Questions? Sympathy ❤️🩹 vs. Empathy ❤️ Are you trying to understand what your friend or partner experiences with hearing loss? I often get asked about playing "simulated" hearing loss to a person with normal hearing or wearing earplugs to experience hearing loss. These exercises typically invoke sympathy, not empathy. You DO NOT need to experience hearing loss to have empathy for those who do. When someone with better hearing tries to understand the experience by listening to recorded hearing loss simulations or wearing earplugs, it often evokes sympathy. This happens because when you listen to these simulations, it’s YOUR brain processing the sound, and it’s now YOUR own experience and YOUR emotions, the opposite of empathy. The key to having empathy is to connect and understand others without trying to change their experiences or project yours onto them. It's asking about THEIR thoughts and feelings, and understanding how hearing loss impacts THEM in the real world, without imposing your own assumptions, coping skills, or judgments. Let’s encourage more empathy, not sympathy with hearing loss. #empathy #sympathy #patientcenteredcare #hearingloss #audiologist

People don't always detect my hearing loss. I'm good at using lipreading strategies to make it through conversations in small groups and during one on one conversations. If it's a busy hearing day at work, I get super tired because it takes a lot of mental work to put it all together. If I overdo my socialization, I end up with Listening Fatigue. Then, it's apparent that I have hearing loss because I can't keep up and lag behind on conversation. Hearing breaks are very much needed during busy hearing/understanding times to recharge my battery. #HearingBreaks #HearingLoss #HearingImpaired #HardOfHearing #ListeningFatigue #SocialBattery #HearingLossLIVE

🔊 "I can HEAR people, but I have trouble understanding them!" This is a very common report in our practice. Many people can tell someone is talking but have issues with clarity and understanding exactly what is being said. After a hearing test, we can usually explain why this might be the case! 🔹 Vowels vs. Consonants: The vowel sounds carry the volume of speech, while the consonant sounds provide each word's meaning. For example, cat, hat, sat, and that all have the same vowel sound, but the consonant sound gives each word its meaning and clarity. 🔹 Hearing Loss and Consonants: Consonant sounds are often soft and high-pitched, falling right into the range where many people have hearing loss. This can cause you to hear but struggle with clarity. The good news? Hearing aids can address this concern with ease! If you notice this issue, contact us today to schedule an appointment. 🦻✨ #HearingAids #ClarityMatters #StayConnected #HealthyHearing #BetterHearing #HearInTucson #TucsonAudiologist #OroValleyAudiology #LeadWithLove
