This alliance coincides with the launch of the AUDA-NEPAD Program for Investment and Financing in Africa's Health Sector, seeking to transform health challenges into economic prospects for the continent. The effort unites public and private sectors to tackle Africa's health challenges while boosting economic growth. Backed by HSRI members Roche, PATH, and USP, the alliance focuses on developing novel solutions to reshape Africa's health landscape. This approach aligns with broader efforts to reinforce healthcare systems and drive economic development across the continent. Kenyan President H.E. William Ruto's involvement in the event underlines the high-level support for this endeavor. Dr. Mories Atoki (Hon.), CEO African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth) led a high-level delegation of health experts, business executives and private sector representatives to the 2024 Africa Health ExCon which held in Cairo, Egypt from June 3 to June 6. The four-day conference featured high-level conversations in various sessions including an ABCHealth-featured session where discussions focused on the challenges, opportunities and potentials of health tourism in Africa. Dr. Mories Atoki (Hon.) provided private sector perspectives on this critical aspect of healthcare in Africa touching on the need for leadership in driving clinical trials through its Research and Development (R & D) content at National level with majority African participation for more Africa centric outcomes and the need to integrate Clinical care at country level during medical travel/tourism leveraging technology as a critical part of any country's care portfolio to ensure the responsible after-care of African patients beyond their country-care. Other remarks across the round table expounded on more collaborations and partnership between the public and private sectors; the sense of urgency required to reduce Africa’s disease burdens through innovation; the reduction of health inequality through access to quality healthcare which can only be achieved with adequate health financing; the need to optimize the entire gamut of the continent’s health economy through regional, national and sub-national mechanisms including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat (AfCFTA); and finally, the absolute necessity of driving local manufacturing of drugs and essential health commodities. GITEX AFRICA 2024, Africa’s biggest tech and start-up convergence is over and it was quite a showing. African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth)-led delegation of businesses, philanthropies and investors enjoyed premium visibility in the sessions as participants discussed the future of health in Africa. The conversations with senior government officials, global business leaders, health professionals and heath entrepreneurs were rich with valuable insights as high-level professionals in the global and regional space both in the public and private sectors shared their thoughts and solutions on how Africa can improve its health outcomes. ABCHealth-led panel session; “Global Perspectives of Private Health in Africa: Improving Health Outcomes” moderated by Dr. Mories Atoki (Hon.), CEO ABCHealth; convened critical stakeholders across sectors and health experts all of whom agree that private health in Africa has the potential to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities. Of particular note, the strength of partnerships were stressed with mention made of the various initiatives being executed by the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN); MTN Nigeria Foundation and Sterling One Foundation. With rising rates of infectious diseases, chronic malnutrition, and poverty, limited resources are under strain, leaving many without adequate access to health. Mozambique - Cabo Delgado status update report! HeRAMS has been operational in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique since January 2022, covering 145 health service delivery units (HSDUs) across the province. This report is based on data reported as of August 2024. While this HeRAMS deployment remains ongoing and data verification and validation continue, the analysis presented here is not final and has been produced solely to inform operations. This is the first report of the HeRAMS Mozambique - Cabo Delgado status update report August 2024 series, focusing on the operational status of health facilities, including the level and type of support provided by partners and availability of basic amenities. Reflecting on the challenges faced in the past, he noted, "We’ve implemented numerous interventions over the years, but it’s often been difficult to discern which were truly effective. While some made a difference, valuable time and resources were spent. Moving forward, we need to understand the specific challenges in different regions and focus on low-cost interventions that deliver real impact." Dr. Butera emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, "We will work together with Africa Quantitative Sciences together with other institutions to tackle these issues head-on." PSI Pakistan was delighted to welcome the KfW Health Mission team, which included Ms. Anna Berezovskaja (Portfolio Manager, Health & Social Protection, KfW, Frankfurt), Dr. Matthias Nachtnebel (Technical Advisor, KfW, Frankfurt), and Dr. Masuma Zaidi (Senior Sector Specialist, Health, KfW, Pakistan). Our Country Director, Ayesha Leghari, and Director of Programs Operations, Adnan Siraj, participated in inspiring discussions, highlighting our shared dedication to social protection, climate resilience, and health innovation. Upholding PSI Pakistan's principle of centering our work around consumers, we explored how public-private partnerships can integrate consumer voices into government-led initiatives such as the Sehat Sahulat Program. This program aims to provide financial protection and access to quality healthcare for the most vulnerable populations. It also promotes community upliftment, accountability, and continuous improvement through dynamic feedback loops. Additionally, we discussed the crucial integration of climate resilience into health strategies, especially for poor and vulnerable populations. The conversation emphasized the significant impact of climate change on health outcomes and explored innovative and sustainable approaches to address these challenges. It was encouraging to see donors open to calculated risk-taking, as innovation often requires stepping out of the comfort zone. On 12 December 2024, South Africa joined the global call to action to commemorate Universal Health Coverage Day under the theme “Health: It’s on the Government.” This pivotal theme underlines the critical role to be played governments across the world in building equitable, resilient, and inclusive healthcare systems that leave no one behind. UHC is not merely an ambition or aspiration; it is a human right, central to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 which is to Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages and in the South African context - the National Development Plan (NDP 2030).
