The 2024 hurricane season caused unprecedented flooding in the southeastern U.S. resulting in significant loss of life, property damage, landslides, road washouts, and major supply chain disruptions that prohibited access to essential supplies. While communities rallied together with the support of retailers, these challenges brought to light the necessity of usable and timely data for businesses to best prepare for and respond to these types of major storms in the future. On November 5, 2024, NOAA's Industry Proving Grounds (IPG) team met with retail industry leaders to discuss disaster preparation and response and how NCEI’s climate data products and services can empower better planning and decision-making. https://bit.ly/3VLfE58

While impacts of Helene remain in our minds and hearts, there are many efforts underway by NOAA (and others) that are moving fast to emphasize data and information solutions in climate resilience and community rebuilding. One of those is the NOAA Industry Proving Grounds (IPG) with retail. NOAA CISESS, as part of NC State University, and a NOAA partner, is involved in this effort in several ways to build tighter collaboration with industry leaders. We're not just analyzing data ----- which is integral part of industry's digital transformation -- we're actively seeking input from retail partners to shape the design and development of existing and new earth observations. 🌀 Debby's Devastation: A Stark Reminder of Nature's Power 🌧️ Debby demonstrated its formidable strength this week, causing extensive flooding and damage in Florida. Initially hitting the coast as a Category 1 hurricane near Steinhatchee, a quaint Gulf coastal community in Taylor County, the storm was downgraded but still packed a punch with its extraordinary intensity and potential record-setting rainfall. 🌊 The impact was severe—over 300,000 homes in Florida and Georgia were plunged into darkness without power, and tragically, at least two lives were lost due to the storm. The National Weather Service has labeled the rainfall levels from Debby as "historic and potentially catastrophic," with tornado watches also in effect for central Florida and southeast Georgia, heightening the urgency for robust emergency responses. ⚠️ As we witness the increasing vigor of such natural events, it's a critical reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preparedness and resilience in our communities. Let's discuss how we can better prepare for and respond to these natural disasters. Out of 17 to 25 storms anticipated this year, between four and seven will morph into major hurricanes with winds that blow at speeds greater than 111 mph. As hurricane season continues, coastal areas face threats from storm surges, flooding, dangerous waves, and rip currents. These hazards can cause significant damage to property and pose risks to life. Experts warn of increasing frequency and intensity of rapid intensification events in Atlantic hurricanes, due to rising ocean temperatures caused by climate change. Business owners must also make sure that no stone is left unturned during hurricane season, and it pays to safeguard your assets. Extreme weather conditions can do tremendous damage to office spaces, warehouses, data centers, and goods. You need to have a checklist to stay prepared. With interstate closures, out-of-service rail lines and nearly 600 roads closed or impassable in the wake of Hurricane Helene, moving goods into and out of affected regions remains challenging. While the initial shock was severe — with the volume of shipments declining as much as 34% in Florida and Georgia on a week-over-week basis — we're starting to see recovery. FourKites data shows that shipments destined for Florida, Georgia and South Carolina plummeted more than 25% on a week-over-week basis in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene. By Tuesday, September 29, shipment volumes had largely recovered for the majority of states in the storm's path — with Florida seeing a 20% week-over-week increase. FourKites will continue to track the impact of tropical storms and hurricanes on global supply chain operations — make sure to follow and stay tuned for further updates. #data #HurricaneHelene #Florida #supplychain
