The G20’s last net zero hold out, Mexico, has announced a new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), committing to reach a net zero economy by 2050. Manish Bapna, President of the Natural Resources Defense Council has described this pledge as “a model for others to follow” and sets “an important benchmark” to assess the credibility of forthcoming pledges from similarly high emitting countries. Jose Luis Samaniego, director general of the Mexican Institute for Ecology and Climate Change has added that the “message” of this target is “even more important,” because “we are also seeing very concerning political messages signaling setbacks in climate leadership around the world.” Whilst the target promises much-needed momentum, our assessment shows the target should be improved in key areas; such as by publishing a detailed plan, setting conditions for the use of offset credits, and setting separate targets for emission reductions, and removals. This is a step in the right direction to make swiss companies, which include some of the largest multi national corporations, more sustainable. To expedite their emissions reduction strategy organisations must have a portfolio of carbon removal measures at hand and secure their carbon removal today, already for years to come. This also provides a channel for investment required in the Global South (between USD 4 and 12 trillion annually) for transitioning their economies to greener economies. #sustainability #climatechange #cop29 #esg #ghg #unfccc https://lnkd.in/evTZpNgU

Recent world ‘events’ mean it isn’t difficult to feel downbeat and more than a little overwhelmed about the climate crisis and what the future might hold for us and our future generations. However, there is momentum to hold onto — and action is happening. At #COP29 this week, we’ve been supporting clients, Mission Possible Partnership and the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA), who are leading the charge towards a #NetZero future in heavy industry and transport. Why this matters: heavy industry and transport account for nearly 30% of global emissions. That’s why #decarbonisation in these sectors isn’t just possible — it’s essential. And while progress is being made, we need to accelerate. The challenge: currently, fossil-fuel-based products are cheaper than green alternatives. This cost gap makes it difficult for producers and buyers to commit to greener choices, keeping them locked into existing systems. But change is within reach. The ITA, along with over 1,000 leaders from business and finance, has this week called for governments to enact policies that stimulate demand for sustainable industrial products. To aid this, they’ve launched a ‘Green Demand Policy Playbook’, packed with practical, evidence-based recommendations to support this critical transition. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ecB3ndrD. New insights from Mission Possible Partnership’s Global Project Tracker also show the pipeline of green projects is expanding, but we need five times more fully approved projects to make the 700+ required green facilities a reality in the next decade. With supportive policy, we could unlock $1 trillion in investment required for these transformative projects. More on that here: https://lnkd.in/eHCjuJx8 Policy action can unlock growth, boost green demand, and bring us closer to a sustainable future. Now is the time to act. So, despite the heavy dose of climate change skepticism coming from certain quarters and proposed fossil fuel policies that will be detrimental to our environment, it’s encouraging to know that there are people and organisations that have a plan to protect this planet of ours. Step-by-step, little-by-little they’re instigating the change we want and need to see to make this world a better place. 🌍

Emission Reduction Targets by Country in 2024: A Global Overview Follow us Sustainability Infographics 📊 for more sustainability insights. ______ Since 2021, 40 additional countries have established climate goals for 2030. Despite this progress, the path to net zero remains uneven. With national warming levels averaging 1.81°C above pre-industrial levels, international pressure is intensifying for deeper and faster emissions cuts. A recent partnership with the National Public Utilities Council and data from Net Zero Tracker sheds light on the current status of national emission targets. The largest and wealthiest nations, responsible for the most greenhouse gas emissions, are under particular scrutiny. - United States: Aims for a 50-52% reduction in emissions below 2005 levels by 2030, with net zero by 2050. - China: Focused on peaking CO₂ emissions by 2030, with a net zero target of 2060. - European Union: Requires a 55% emission reduction by 2030, with a collective net zero goal by 2050. - Australia: Targeting a 43% emission reduction by 2030, with net zero by 2050. Some countries, such as Comoros, Bhutan, Gabon, Suriname, and Guyana, claim to have already achieved net zero. Meanwhile, major emitters like Russia, India, and Indonesia have set net zero targets that fall short of the Paris Climate Accord’s 2050 deadline. - Finland: Leading the charge with a legally binding net zero target by 2035. - Germany: Set for net zero by 2045, ahead of the Paris Accord timeline. The global race to net zero continues, with countries at different stages of commitment. Significant progress has been made, but many of the world’s largest emitters still need to align their goals with international climate agreements. The path forward requires urgent and collective action. Sustainability Infographics 📊 #ClimateAction #NetZero #Sustainability #GlobalGoals

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗕𝗧𝗶 𝗻𝗲𝘁-𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 ☁ After fulfilling the first part of our Green Pledge by cutting our Corporate Carbon Footprint by 50.4% between 2019 and 2023, we are now taking our Lead in Green commitment to the next level. Therefore, we have set ourselves ambitious, science-based net-zero targets, validated by the @Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). That means that our targets align with climate science and the 1.5°C Paris Agreement goal: 1️⃣ Reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 across our value chain. 2️⃣ Reduce absolute Scopes 1+2 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2022 base year. 3️⃣ Reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and use of sold products for sold fossil fuels by 42% by 2030 from a 2022 base year. Our Head of Sustainability Laura explains how we want to achieve them and why we are so dedicated to these targets united under the motto: 𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘁-𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. After three insightful days at COP29, it's evident that ambition and innovation are abundant, but so are the challenges. Here are some key take aways from Anna Ljungdahl, Senior Investment Director with focus on Climate Tech at Industrifonden. ➡️ Solutions exist but require scalable funding. From renewable energy to circular solutions, the technical innovations needed to meet our climate goals are already here. But without the necessary financing to scale them commercially, progress will remain slow. ➡️ Financing is unevenly distributed. While private investment in climate solutions is growing, it is not reaching all nations equally. This disparity risks delaying global efforts and leaving valuable solutions untapped. ➡️ Political hurdles remain the biggest obstacle. Stronger global frameworks, consistent regulations, and ambitious climate policies are essential. As Al Gore pointed out, "Politicians are themselves a renewable resource" – a hopeful reminder that change is possible with sustained public and business pressure. For Sweden, the stakes are clear. As a small, export-driven country with world-leading sustainable innovations, we have both a responsibility and an opportunity to make a global impact. At Industrifonden, we’re committed to support the transformative solutions needed to achieve net zero. Let's work together to overcome these barriers and unlock the full potential of climate innovation.

At COP29 Azerbaijan, Inger Andersen, UNEP Executive Director, emphasised the urgency of circular economy approaches to tackle the triple planetary crisis; Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss, and Pollution. Key highlights of her speech: 🌡 Current climate pledges risk a 2.6–2.8°C temperature rise. Achieving 1.5°C requires a 42% emission reduction by 2030—circularity is essential to achieve this. 🌱 Linear systems (take, make, waste) contribute to 60% of greenhouse gas emissions and massive biodiversity and pollution losses. Nations are realising they must change track. Since 2016, 71 new national circular economy calls to action, roadmaps and operational strategies have been launched. Now the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) is a chance to do much more. 🔄 Circularity in Action:Highlighting two examples of the interconnection between circularity and benefits across the triple planetary crisis. The role of circularity in supporting the shift to clean energy technologies: Minerals for clean energy are infinitely recyclable—circular design can maximise their lifespan. The role of circularity in tackling plastic pollution: With only 9% of plastics recycled, circular solutions are vital to protect ecosystems and health. Collaboration, policy innovation, and circular economy business models can make circularity a global norm, driving economic equity and resilience without harming the planet. 💡 Let's mainstream circular practices into our business strategies and New Zealand’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)—because protecting our planet is the ultimate win for humanity. What circular actions do you think should be included in our NDC’s? The Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao is currently seeking feedback to inform the Government’s decision on its international climate change target for 2031–35. This emissions reduction target will be set under the Paris Agreement and be New Zealand’s second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC2). The Government will set NDC2 in early 2025.
