Bridging Nigeria's Sanitation Divide! Did you know? 50% of Local Government Areas (LGAs) in North West, Nigeria are Open Defecation-Free (ODF), while only 1% in the South West have achieved this status. This shows alarming disparities in sanitation access and open defecation practice across regions. Let's work together to address these regional disparities and ensure equal access to safe sanitation for everyone in Nigeria. Let's bridge this gap! Do You Know: For the 1st time, the World Health Organization fully integrated the concept of water safety planning specifically for small water supplies, in its recent "Guidelines for drinking water quality: small water supplies"? With the twin threats of cholera and flooding incidents across Nigeria and majority of the population relying on small water supplies such as household wells and community boreholes, water safety planning should no longer be a luxury in Nigeria but a necessity. Hence, Network of Water Rights Initiative [NEWARI] is calling for its promotion and prioritisation in water supply across Nigeria. **FG Reiterates Commitment to End Open Defecation in #Nigeria** The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating open defecation across #Nigeria. The government is calling for increased efforts from all stakeholders to achieve this vital goal. The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, announced that 135 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and over 30,000 communities have attained Open Defecation Free (ODF) status since the launch of the Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet Campaign in 2019. To tackle existing challenges, the Minister outlined several initiatives by the Federal Government, including the declaration of a State of Emergency in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector, the National Action Plan to revitalize the sector, the Partnership for Expanded Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (PEWASH) Programme, the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) Programme, as well as Presidential Executive Order 009, which aims to achieve an Open Defecation Free Nigeria by 2025. #Nigerianwatersupplynew #Nigeriasaniationnews Source: FMWRS African Water Works Utility - Private Operator (Water and Sanitation) across #Nigeria African Water Works Utility Western Africa

Many #Nigerians struggle to access clean water and improved sanitation facilities daily. This problem is particularly acute in northern Nigeria, where only 30 percent of the population has access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. This contributes to high prevalence of waterborne diseases, threatens the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, and contributes to low levels of school enrollment, especially among girls. Through partnerships with local governments and the private sector, USAID is increasing access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education among some of the most at-risk communities in the north. USAID to support sustainable water supply and sanitation, there is need for providing grant funding for Operation and maintenance of the existing infrastructure. African Water Works Utility has position itself to work with state government to ensure adequate management of water supply system and sanitation to all #Nigerians. https://lnkd.in/dUvqMtx8

📢 INTEGRITY AND REGULATION IN SANITATION Improving integrity and regulation in Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) is key to promoting delivery of better services that leave no one behind. This positively contributes to Zambia's efforts in attaining objectives of SDG no. 6. In this regard, the Water Integrity Network (WIN) held a two (2) day workshop in Kigali, Rwanda (31st July, 1st Aug 2024), focused on addressing aspects of integrity and regulation in sanitation. I was privileged to make a presentation at the workshop in which I highlighted some of the integrity challenges Zambia is facing and how we are addressing them. #To improved service provision and regulation.

The cogent need to prioritize regulation in the water sector. ...with the renewed commitments and strong political will being demonstrated by the #Enugu State Governor, which are backed up with several ongoing #WASH interventions in State, the risk of eroding these gains are heightened without a regulatory framework in place. Network of Water Rights Initiative [NEWARI] through its policy dialogue session, oganized with WASHfID (WASH for Impact and Development) and other partners, have emphasized the cogent need for the Enugu State Government to establish the Enugu State Water Regulatory Commission to sustain the gains being made in the sector. https://lnkd.in/dCrH_AxY WaterAid WaterAid Nigeria Sanitation and Water for All - a UNICEF-hosted global partnership UNICEF Nigeria Water Witness International The Trinity Challenge Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Prof. Chidi Onyia Temple Chukwuemeka Oraeki Keir Bradwell

OPEN DEFECATION IN NIGERIA! Nigeria's sanitation reality check: Did you know? Only 134 Local Government Areas (LGAs) out of a total of 774 Local Govt Areas in Nigeria are Open Defecation-Free (ODF)! Seventeen (17) states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, still have ZERO Local Government that is open defecation-free. Let's borrow from Temple Chukwuemeka Oraeki 's #ODF Math that has been begging for answers, since 2019: x - y = z (x = Number of LGAs in Nigeria =774; y = Number of ODF LGAs , and z = Number of LGAs yet to be ODF) Nigeria's Target is to make z = 0 by 2025. {As at September 2024, y = 134} 1. At what rate will z be zero by 2025? 2. What approach can we use to make z = 0 by 2025? 3. With barely 1 year left to the target year, if we combine all the efforts of the last 5-6 years that culminated to 134 ODF LGAs, will z be zero by end of 2025? One constant remains amidst the uncertainty, Nigeria has to exponentially step up its sanitation efforts and accelerate its sanitation revolution! #OpenDefecationFree #ODF #ODFNigeria #SanitationMatters #Nigeria #WASH #CleanNigeria UNICEF Nigeria WaterAid Nigeria Jane Bevan Sanitation and Water for All - a UNICEF-hosted global partnership OPS WASH RWSN - Rural Water Supply Network Kabiru ABASS SATO ACCOUNTABILITY FOR WATER - AFW Water Witness International World Toilet Organization The Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF) The Sanitation Learning Hub Ogbodo Ogene Ikenna Ugwu Bolu Onabolu Onabolu Rebecca Bolatito Gabriel, MBA WASHfID (WASH for Impact and Development) African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) Emmanuel Uguru
