This #NDEAM and #DisabilityHistoryMonth, we remember where we've been, but also, how far we've come. By creating the Justice Center, New York State overhauled a system that allowed abusers to commit bad acts, to move from facility to facility, and to abuse and neglect vulnerable people time and time again. Since 2013, more than 1,000 people have been barred from the service system and more than 2.5 million Staff Exclusion List checks have been completed. "Good enough," will never be "good enough" again. Learn more about the Justice Center and our commitment to protecting vulnerable populations in NY: https://lnkd.in/eu2a-ghb _

🌟 Building Bridges, Not Walls: A New Approach to Youth Crime Prevention 🌟 In Fulton County, we must address youth crime with compassion and collaboration, not just punishment. By fostering better relationships between law enforcement and our young people, we can create a safer, more resilient community for all. Instead of defunding the police, let's invest in programs that promote mentorship, conflict resolution, and positive youth development. Let's empower our officers to be guardians and role models, not just enforcers. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a brighter future for our youth. It starts with open hearts, open minds, and a commitment to working hand-in-hand for change. #YouthEmpowerment #CommunityPolicing #BuildingBridges #SonyaForDistrict4 #FultonCountyTogether #FultonCounty

Today, IFPR celebrates its Human Trafficking Prevention team. According to the FBI, New Jersey is considered a hub for human trafficking due to its dense population and close proximity to New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Addressing human trafficking within the community, IFPR’s Human Trafficking Prevention Team provides residents and employees in Ocean County free training to learn what human trafficking is, how to recognize the warning signs and how to safely report. Since the program’s start in 2024, over 600 individuals have been trained. The training is recommended for educators, law enforcement agencies, first responders, social service providers, parents/guardians, healthcare professionals, retail or food service employees, religious leaders/groups and PTA groups. Responding to the needs of our community, Preble Street first became involved in anti-trafficking work in 2010 when youth survivors of human trafficking shared their experiences with staff at the Preble Street Teen Center. Daniella Cameron, then Teen Services Supervisor, and now Preble Street Deputy Director, helped form a coalition to address human trafficking and support survivors in Maine: "I started connecting with sexual assault providers, domestic violence providers, law enforcement, and the U.S. Attorney's Office... we co-founded a community-based coalition of providers focused on anti-trafficking and that was the beginning of Preble Street’s involvement in anti-trafficking work." Today, Preble Street runs a dedicated Anti-Trafficking Services program, serving all 16 counties in Maine and providing comprehensive services to survivors on their path to recovery, healing, and justice. It is estimated that 50 million individuals are currently trapped in modern slavery, with children making up 1 in 4 of these victims. To put this into perspective, if the average public school in the U.S. has around 500 students, the number of enslaved children could fill nearly a quarter of all public schools in the U.S. However, this situation can change. Children face significantly higher risks of trafficking, exploitation, and abuse in countries where justice systems fail to protect the most vulnerable. Yet, when justice systems are properly equipped, trained, and strengthened, the rates of violence drop consistently. #Dressember #Dressember2024

Worried about Our Community: A Call to Action 🫵In our neighborhoods, the constant stream of bad news has become overwhelming. Every day, we hear about crimes and violence in the very spaces we call home, leaving us feeling vulnerable and anxious. 😟 #StaySafe #CommunityFirst It’s disheartening when those responsible for keeping us safe—our local authorities and community policing personnel—seem unresponsive to the rising crime rates. The NCJA Center for Justice Planning (CJP) team attended the Giffords Center for Violence Intervention Conference this week, joining community violence intervention workers nationwide, and from Latin America and the Caribbean. This conference brought together CVI workers, highlighting the importance of gun violence prevention, community violence reduction and intervention, as well as trauma-informed care and self care for the workers. The NCJA CJP team is working to expand equity in public safety funding to organizations that do #CVI work and bridge gaps between system partners and community based organizations. #CVIConference #gunviolence

As we gear up for the upcoming election, DVCS has prepared a crucial document outlining our priorities for a safer and more equitable community. We urge all parties and candidates to commit to the following essential actions: 1. An ambitious plan to eliminate gender-based violence. 2. Adequate, sustainable funding for 24/7 family violence services. 3. Comprehensive case management for victim survivors. 4. Specialist family violence support for those facing barriers. 5. Homes for individuals who have experienced family violence. 6. Improved justice and legal responses for victim survivors. 7. Training in common risk assessment and management. 8. Protection of family violence files as privileged communications Together, we can build a safer, more supportive ACT for everyone. Let's hold our leaders accountable and ensure that these priorities are front and center in the 2024 election! #ACTElection2024 #EndGenderBasedViolence #DVCS #SaferCommunitiesober

I am conscious of victims of non-recent/historical institutional abuses still waiting for justice and healing responses. Ready to bring my expertise and international research on institutional abuses to the Seanad if given the opportunity. In particular would like to be there when it comes to approving terms of reference for the new abuse Commission recommended by last year's #ScopingInquiry which are expected to come before the Oireachtas later this year... Other groups on my radar are victim/survivors of #MotherandBabyHomes, #TuamMotherandBabyHomeAlliance, #IrishDefenceForces,
