On this World Environment Day, the Egypt Healthcare Authority proudly embraces sustainability as a cornerstone of our vision for 2030. Committed to Egypt's green transition, we are dedicated to transforming our healthcare facilities into models of environmental stewardship. Here's how we're making an impact: We are improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions by integrating advanced air filtration systems and renewable energy sources, demonstrating our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing air quality in our facilities. Our facilities are increasingly powered by solar energy, contributing to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on non-renewable energy sources. By implementing state-of-the-art water conservation techniques, we ensure optimal and rational use of clean water, optimizing water use, and reducing wastage across all healthcare operations. We are also eliminating mercury from health facilities by replacing mercury-based medical equipment with safer alternatives, ensuring a healthier environment for patients and staff. Our comprehensive waste management protocols ensure that all medical waste is disposed of safely and sustainably. We promote the use of recycled equipment and machinery, minimizing our environmental impact and supporting a circular economy. Additionally, we are adopting low carbon footprint medicines and medical supplies, prioritizing suppliers and products that demonstrate a commitment to low carbon practices. Our efforts have earned us significant recognition. Sharm El Sheikh International Hospital became the first Egyptian member of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals #GGHH network, followed by El-Ramad Hospital in Port Said. We are now focusing on our carbon footprint and transforming all facilities into green. EHA’s efforts were also recognized by the International Hospital Federation and the Arab Hospital Federation, underscoring our leadership in healthcare sustainability. Recently, the 77th World Health Assembly saw a record focus on the threat climate change poses to public health. Following the first-ever dedicated Health Day at COP28 in #Dubai, the WHA resolution brings attention to climate and health and highlights the lack of financing and investment undermining efforts to address climate change. The resolution explicitly mandates the WHO to develop a Global Plan of Action on climate and health by WHA78 in May 2025. As EHA joins global efforts, we continue advancing towards greener healthcare systems. Our initiatives in improving air quality, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting sustainable practices align with these global commitments. 🌳🚚 Our UPS Healthcare team recently partnered with the International Tree Foundation, The UPS Foundation, and the local organization Alberi in Periferia in Rome to take meaningful steps toward urban sustainability. Sustainable healthcare solutions for the Caribbean region focus on improving healthcare access, efficiency, and resilience while addressing environmental and climate challenges. Key strategies include: 1. Renewable Energy for Health Facilities: Solar and wind energy can power hospitals and clinics, ensuring reliable electricity during extreme weather events and reducing dependence on costly fossil fuels. 2. Telemedicine and Digital Health: Expanding telemedicine services can improve access to healthcare, particularly in remote areas, while reducing transportation needs, thus lowering carbon emissions and healthcare costs. 3. Climate-Resilient Health Infrastructure: Strengthening health facilities to withstand hurricanes, floods, and other climate-related events ensures continuous care and minimizes damage-related costs. 4. Waste Management and Recycling: Implementing proper disposal and recycling practices for medical waste helps reduce environmental pollution and public health risks. 5. Sustainable Water and Sanitation Systems: Rainwater harvesting, efficient water use, and proper sanitation are essential for reducing water scarcity issues and ensuring a clean, safe environment in healthcare settings. 6. Training and Capacity Building: Educating healthcare professionals in sustainable practices, emergency preparedness, and climate-related health risks ensures effective responses to both immediate needs and long-term climate impacts. 7. Community Health Education: Programs focused on preventive care, nutrition, and climate-related health awareness (e.g., vector-borne diseases) help communities proactively manage health risks, reducing the demand for emergency services. By adopting these sustainable healthcare practices, the Caribbean can build a more resilient, accessible, and environmentally responsible healthcare system that better serves both people and the planet.

Epic for C Free to ignite conversations around sustainability at the GIANT Health Event earlier this week.... ...and of course it was great to spend quality F2F time with Eddie Fitzgerald-Barron and Adam Forster (it was also the shortest I have felt in a while 😅) We had the pleasure of meeting so many innovators in the space across the healthcare spectrum; a lot of whom are tackling the tricky NHS tender process, to allow broader access to their products 🧑🏽⚕️ A non-insignificant-part of this process is to provide a Carbon Reduction Plan (and we are not far of from a Net Zero Strategy being a requirement!). I personally think this can only be a good thing - it is incredible that such a huge system are taking their emissions so seriously.
