What if we told you that Mother Tongue farmers in our communities are rewriting their futures? Read on to learn how. Traditionally, these rural communities are marginal and small holding farmers. Despite their farming knowledge, they struggle financially depending heavily on chemical fertilizers & local lenders affecting their produce. We have been committed to supporting them and till date, our Agricultural Program has created 138 Kisan Sabhas and an FPC-Kapasan Agro Producers Company Ltd. (KAPCL) in Rajasthan. With training & support, our farmers are now beginning to see a gradual transformation. Here’s how: 1. They are shifting away from chemicals, adopting sustainable methods, and learning multi-crop cultivation and water conservation. 2. With new group savings, bank accounts, and e-Mitra services, they’re building stronger financial foundations. 3. Training in goat rearing, poultry, pisciculture, and vermicomposting is helping them seek new horizons and 4. Discounts from the Agriculture Dept. through KAPCL are making a huge impact. Our journey is dedicated to equipping our Mother Tongue communities with tools and knowledge they need to conquer their financial challenges and thrive! #KisanSabhas #FarmerEmpowerment #SustainableFarming #KAPCL #NABARD #agriculturedepartment #marginalisedcommunities #mewar #mothertongue

Promoting millet cultivation Millets are a superfood. The Government of India is promoting their cultivation and consumption because it is both profitable and environmentally sustainable. On 30.05.24, 5 beneficiaries of Agragami India’s livelihoods project in Bodhgaya block of Gaya district Bihar received free of cost bajra (pearl millet) seeds from Shri Sanjay Kumar Agrawal, secretary, Agriculture Department, to grow trial crops of bajra on their small land-holdings. Beneficiary hesitancy was overcome after much motivation by the Agragami team. Agragami will follow beneficiaries closely to ensure that they receive essential guidance and crop-specific pesticides, throughout the cultivation process. When these farmers see profits from this trial crop, many more in Bodhgaya will be encouraged to seek better returns through growing millets. #milletfarming #milletfarminginbodhgaya #sustainableagriculture #foodsecurity #supplementaryincome #empoweringwomen #promotingmilletfarming

In 2013, a life-changing event shook Somashekar Pogula to his core. Armed with an MBA and a background in the corporate world of FMCG, he found himself reevaluating his path. The catalyst for this transformation was a personal tragedy - witnessing his father's painful battle with kidney ailments. This experience opened his eyes to a sobering reality: the connection between unhealthy diets and the rise of life-threatening diseases. But it wasn't just health concerns that tugged at Somashekar's heartstrings. He was deeply troubled by the distressing trend of farmer suicides plaguing India. These twin revelations propelled him to take action, and in response, he founded Adithi Millets in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. Somashekar's mission was clear: he aimed to steer farming back to its organic roots. He understood the devastating consequences of chemically-laden produce and was determined to make a change. Through Adithi Millets, Somashekar embarked on a journey to revive and restore these ancestral farming practices. What began modestly with 30 farmers in 2017 has now blossomed into a thriving collaboration with over 200 farmers across seven villages in Kurnool. The heart of Adithi Millets is its core product - millets. These grains aren't just incredibly nutritious; they are also cost-effective to cultivate, alleviating the financial burdens on farmers. Adithi Millets champions the "Millets to Millions" philosophy, striving to spread the benefits of this superfood to a wider audience. Farmers who partner with Adithi Millets receive vital support, including a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) and free seeds. The company stands by its commitment by purchasing the harvest, ensuring a stable market for these dedicated farmers. . . . Rice is a staple - and all of us consume and enjoy it in some form- from regal biryanis to more frugal forms. Cultivation of paddy requires backbreaking labour in transplanting the saplings - in water logged fields. Paddy cultivation is a major consumer of water- and many HUF supported projects work on enhancing agricultural productivity through resilient, yet water efficient farming. Some steps include System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and in-line transplantation. The HUF supported programme with PANI , under the stewardship of the redoubtable Deo Datt Singh, in eastern Uttar Pradesh is one such example. One of the joys of visiting fields during sowing period is that we get to witness and, as a one off, partake in the field practices. One of our programme managers, kumud joshi took it on to also experience this transplantation effort first hand. At Hindustan Unilever Foundation (#HUF), in the spirit of working closely with our partners and communities, we remain well connected from the planning to the execution stages. #Agriculture #Sustainability #DIY Anantika Singh

I'm proud to see the impact of the Better Life Farming initiative in India. With a sample of 276 smallholder vegetable farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, a follow-up impact study by 60 Decibels reveals the transformative effects of this program. 📊 Key findings: 📌 89% of farmers believe BLF puts their interests first, thanks to strong field support and outreach. 📌 Confidence in agriculture is soaring, with 88% reporting an increased willingness to invest, largely due to rising yields and better financial outcomes. 📌 90% reported increased crop production (up from 78% at baseline), 87% saw an income boost, and another 87% reported an improved quality of life—achieving better financial security, access to education, and healthier meals. Supporting smallholder farmers strengthens food systems and builds resilient communities. It's as simple as that. #BetterLifeFarming #SustainableAgriculture #SmallholderFarmers #Bayer #Impact

Millets are making a comeback, fueled by the recent International Year of Millets and India's efforts to promote their consumption. While many States are still catching up and some others are yet to start their efforts, Odisha stands out with its comprehensive Odisha Millets Mission (OMM). This initiative addresses all aspects of millet production and utilization, including: * Developing best practices for millet cultivation. * Guaranteeing minimum prices for farmers to incentivize millet production. * Establishing a dedicated administrative structure to streamline efforts. * Allocating funds to support millet-related initiatives. * Actively promoting millet consumption among the public. The success of Odisha's model highlights the potential of millets to improve food security and nutrition. Other States can take a cue and emulate. businessline Arvind Padhee #millets Odisha Millets Mission BL Commodities Bharti Institute of Public Policy, ISB Indian School of Business
