Farmer Buy-In: The Key to Scaling Regenerative Programs 🦚 One of the most critical aspects of implementing “regenerative agriculture programs” on a large scale is gaining farmer buy-in. Without farmer commitment to adopting these practices, scaling up sustainability efforts becomes nearly impossible. Farmers are the backbone of any agricultural initiative, and their willingness to embrace change determines the success or failure of regenerative programs. 🦚 To achieve this, we need to create a “farmer-centric value proposition” that incorporate the producer as part of the supply chain and that resonate with farmers, offering them tangible benefits such as agronomic results (better soil health, organic matter, higher yields), economic-financial incentives, premium prices for the produced crops, and a demonstrable, emotional benefit related to the positive impact they are generating on the environment. 🦚 It is about more than just introducing new practices: it is about building trust, providing the necessary support, training, monitoring, and demonstrating how these changes can generate long-term gains. 🌿 How do you approach farmer participation in your sustainability programs? What strategies have proven effective in gaining farmer acceptance for regenerative practices? #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability #FarmerFirst #farmercentric #AgTech #SustainableFarming #SoilHealth #ClimateSmartAg #FutureOfFarming #AgInputs #CPG

🌱 The potential for regenerative agriculture is real. There is strong evidence that regenerative farming practices can restore soil health. Some regenerative farms show an 80% increase in Soil-Organic-Matter (SOM) and 3x higher soil microbial activity. Agriculture can contribute more than 5 gigatonnes of CO2 per year in carbon removals and emissions reductions (around 10% of annual global GHG emissions). Changes to agriculture could deliver 72% of total potential improvements needed to address biodiversity loss. Studies show a correlation between regenerative practices and species richness and abundance. Regenerative agriculture can be more profitable and deliver superior risk-adjusted financial returns to farmers and investors. We call this the “Regenerative Edge”. It is driven by higher yields, lower costs, higher prices, opportunity to tap into payments for ecosystem services and better risk mitigation. Regenerative Real Assets can deliver an internal rate of return (IRR) that is 1-3% higher than conventional farmland investing, while also mitigating a number of social, environmental and economic risks and providing resilience to climate change and natural capital loss. Investors can have the most direct impact on how land is managed by investing in farmland itself. This is where we focus our efforts at SLM Partners. 🌾 ------------------- 🔗Read the full white paper here: https://lnkd.in/gSU7h2f4 🎥Watch the webinar replay: https://lnkd.in/gAA6MARc #regenerativeagriculture #impactinvesting #naturalcapital #realassets

Can we share a positive perspective for Farmers… Yes we can! Regenerative Agriculture provides significant benefits for farmers but also helps to make the food system more sustainable. Current agricultural methods, especially intensive farming, can leave a damaging environmental legacy and produce food of lower nutritional value. By applying regenerative agricultural practices, we can: > lower GHG emissions; > reduce freshwater consumption; > cut back on nitrate pollution; > improve soil quality and fertility; > enhance biodiversity; and > grow more nutrient-rich crops. Our point of view will address the following, with a specific perspective on the Netherlands: - What is regenerative agriculture, and what are its benefits and risks - What are the opportunities and challenges for food-agri players in scaling regenerative agriculture? How can they collaborate? Researchers make surprising discovery after examining farmers' regenerative agriculture practices: 'More than just money' Game-changing research revealed the reality behind farmers' relationsips with regenerative agriculture. Here are 3 main insights: 1) Motivation Beyond Money: Farmers are increasingly adopting regenerative agriculture not just for potential financial gains from carbon credits, but for personal freedom, improved quality of life, and environmental benefits. They seek to reduce dependence on high-input, chemical-intensive farming methods. 2) Community Support is Key: The transition to regenerative practices fosters increased solidarity among farmers. They form support networks to share resources and navigate challenges, highlighting the importance of community in achieving sustainable farming goals. 3) Barriers to Carbon Programs: Many farmers are deterred from participating in carbon credit programs due to low financial returns and cumbersome paperwork. https://bit.ly/3AqZXbO #regenag #regenerative #carbon #sustainability #agriculture

🌱 Let's talk regenerative agriculture! The buzz around it is growing, but is it a genuine movement or just a booming bubble? 🤔 Companies with over $1 trillion in combined annual revenues are now adopting the term "regenerative agriculture" (Giller et al. 2021). So, how do we cut through the noise and connect with those genuinely committed to change? Here are some key pointers: 1️⃣ Proximity Matters: Ensure the person or organization is genuinely connected to the land and farmers. Look for those actively engaging in stakeholder consultations and providing open channels of communication. 2️⃣ Fairness Counts: Check if the organization offers a fair business model for farmers. If value is created, especially through environmental payments, farmers should be the primary beneficiaries. 3️⃣ Transparency is Key: Verify transparency levels regarding partnerships, protocols, and outcomes. Those committed to real change won't shy away from openness. 4️⃣ Complexity Acknowledgment: Farming and the environment are complex systems with unique local dynamics. Beware of one-size-fits-all approaches; success lies in acknowledging and adapting to this complexity. 5️⃣ Realistic Timelines: Agriculture follows its own rhythm dictated by seasons and nature's laws. Be cautious of promises for rapid results. Genuine RegenAg projects recognize the need for a minimum 5-year commitment to guide a full transition and de-risk farmers. Your thoughts are always welcome! 💬 ReGeneration #RegenerativeAgriculture #JoinTheConversation Source: Giller, K.E. et al. I am committed to expanding my knowledge and enjoy seeking opportunities to explore new ideas. Hence, I wanted to talk about a webinar I attended hosted by RaddisCotton on “How to Scale up Regenerative Cotton Sourcing”. 💡 With cotton being a commodity with a history of exploitation in the value chain and negative environmental impacts, I was curious how alternative agricultural practices and cotton value chain approaches can look in practice and the associated issues with their implementation. Here are some of my key insights: 🌾 Regenerative agriculture goes beyond just ensuring the sustainability of growing crops. Empowering the local Indigenous people and their ancient place-based knowledge is fundamental to regenerative agriculture. 🤝 A regenerative cotton value network requires suppliers, such as farmer families, to be on equal footing with buyers. Raddis approaches this through a multi-year collaboration system; brand partners sign up for it and pay fees upfront to enable the transformation from degenerative towards regenerative farm practices. Farmers are provided payment at the time of procurement by bank transfer for their cotton and are assured they have reliable buyers, encouraging consistent use of sustainable practices. Raddis can scale up regenerative farming in different areas through this approach with multiple brand partners. 🙆 Upscaling is not a smooth process, especially due to the various stakeholders involved in the network and ongoing legislative changes like the EU Green Deal. Open communication and commitment between all stakeholders is key to transform the commodity chain into a collaborative value network!
