Dr. Mădălina Galațchi participated in the "Sprat Age Reading Workshop," held from November 18-22 in Varna, Bulgaria, under the auspices of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM - FAO). The purpose of this event was to develop a new age reading protocol for sprat, a commercially important fish species in the Black Sea. By establishing a common methodology, researchers aim to ensure more efficient and sustainable management of fish stocks in the region. *** FOLLOW US: YT & Instagram: @incdm.grigoreantipa FB: /INCDM

Industrial fishing practices are increasing human exposure to methylmercury, according to new research from SEAS, in collaboration with the University of Delaware and The University of British Columbia. The research, led by Prof. Elsie Sunderland, found that industrial fisheries that harvest tuna and other large fish in tropical and subtropical waters account for more than 70% of all methylmercury fished from the ocean. “Large-scale industrial fisheries are fishing top predators in high methylation zones,” said Mi-Ling Li, an Assistant Professor at the University of Delaware, former postdoctoral fellow at SEAS and first author of the paper. “Our research finds that the current fishing choices are amplifying human methylmercury exposure. We need to find better options.” Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/ewhJgwCB

Applying historical data to contemporary science & management Our Working Group on the History of Fish and Fisheries (WGHIST) evaluates long-term changes in social-ecological systems, bringing together researchers to discuss and undertake work on change in marine and fisheries systems over multidecadal to centennial timescales. WGHIST members Cordula Scherer and Poul Holm recently developed a Historical Plankton Index to overcome the lack of long-term ocean productivity proxies that could be used to understand past fisheries dynamics. This extends the historical record of temperature-driven zooplankton abundance in the North Sea over a multi-centennial time scale - back to 800 CE - to understand its influence on the historical fortunes of fisheries exemplified through the commercial Dutch herring fishery. 📖 Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/e6v96Wn6 ➡ Find out more about WGHIST: https://lnkd.in/eKGGGN5P #WGHIST Bryony Caswell

Anglers, have you ever wished your catch could contribute to science? If you take a trip to the Northern Highland Fisheries Research Area (NHFRA), it can! Located near Boulder Junction in Vilas County, WI, the NHFRA consists of five lakes (Escanaba, Nebish, Pallette, Spruce and Mystery) that have been continuously managed for experimental fisheries research since 1946. The best part? Anyone who fishes the NHFRA directly contributes to their long-term angler database. This year at the NHFRA’s Escanaba Lake, scientists have begun studying the effects of predetermined harvest levels on a formerly unexploited walleye population. A mandatory creel survey means that when you opt to fish here, the data relating to your harvest is recorded in what has become one of the largest creel datasets in the world. To learn more about these lake's history, current regulations and how you can contribute to science by fishing, you can visit the NHFRA homepage at https://lnkd.in/gaE4Px_A

One lesson I'm taught again and again building software is that the easiest-sounding tasks can be the most challenging to execute. MSC already posts their certificates and vessel lists and we have all the vessel risk data, how hard could creating a real-time vessel risk dashboard be? The answer: extremely hard! Endless kudos to Vipin Goyal, Emily Zimmerman & Ryan Taylor for taking on a challenge 25 years in the making and delivering a transformative solution in 6 months. This is what modern, operational and scalable supply chain integrity looks like—and we're just getting started. 🙌

📢 Request for Proposals: Grand Council Treaty #3 Fisheries Health Assessment 📆 Due: January 24, 2025 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gwYhrjk6 Grand Council Treaty #3 is commissioning a biological assessment to evaluate the health and sustainability of commercial and recreational fish species across Treaty #3 Territory. Guided by Manito Aki Inaakonigewin (MAI), the project will review existing population studies and watershed literature to identify key fishery health indicators and address monitoring and assessment gaps. The study aims to develop recommendations for sustainable practices, enhanced monitoring techniques, and a draft field study outline to support future research and community-based monitoring initiatives. All findings and reports will remain the intellectual property of Grand Council Treaty #3.
