Innovative biotech and biomanufacturing are very important for Europe’s green transition. With its innovative power and by creating new industrial ecosystems, the bio-based industries sector is a strategic pillar for biomanufacturing in Europe today. We hope that the new EU Parliament and EU Commission will be bold on turning the EU Communication, "Building the future with nature: Boosting Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing in the EU" into reality! Yet another Hub? 🤔 That was my first thought when reading the EC's Communication on "Boosting Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing in the EU" which states in Action 2: "establishing an EU Biotech Hub, an operational tool for biotech companies to navigate through the regulatory framework and identify support to scale up". Yesterday I was given the opportunity to represent Fraunhofer-Institut für Grenzflächen- und Bioverfahrenstechnik IGB and IBISBA at a workshop organized by the EC's Directorate General GROW to discuss the Communication and respective actions 🤓 Some key points for me were 👉 The Biotech Hub would largely build on existing infrastructures, e.g. IBISBA, Pilots4U, or existing regional clusters, e.g. CLIB - Cluster Industrielle Biotechnologie. A respective mapping of European activities has been started. 👉 Better access and transferability of regional funding could help companies to get the support they need from e.g. pilot facilities, although perhaps located somewhere else. Briefly stated, maybe only remains my wishful thinking. 👉 Bio-based content (or rather renewable carbon content?!) requirements for certain product categories could stimulate market demand, but need to be seen in the perspective with other regulations (e.g. plastic waste regulation) 👉 It was not just me whining about the costs of, not building, but maintaining large research infrastructures. That point got noted 🤞 🙏 YES, there is still the plan to have an updated Bioeconomy Strategy in 2025 Thank you for the opportunity! #biotechnology #bioeconomy #biomanufacturing

FTP highlights the importance of the forest #bioeconomy and wood-based products as building blocks of European competitiveness and a sustainable future. The 4 recommendations to take into account in the upcoming #FP10 are the following: 1. Facilitating business participation by simplifying and clarifying the framework programme 2. Bringing the key themes of forest-based bioeconomy to the forefront 3. Channelling research and innovation funding to well-functioning partnership models 4. “Building the future with nature: Boosting Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing in the EU” 👉 Read the Full Position Paper: https://lnkd.in/evpanq3u

The new European Commission Communication “Building the Future with Nature: Biotechnologies and Biomanufacturing in the EU” published yesterday puts forward a series of targeted actions to tackle challenges and boost #biotechnology and #biomanufacturing in the EU which are crucial for the #competitiveness and modernization of EU industry. The Communication also indicates the upcoming review of the #EUBioeconomy Strategy, which will be published before the end of 2025. The review of the EU Bioeconomy strategy will - take into account the current societal, demographic and environmental challenges, - reinforce the bioeconomy’s industrial dimension and - its links to biotechnology and biomanufacturing to contribute to a stronger EU (bio-)economy. We look forward to engage with all stakeholders interested in the review of the EU Bioeconomy strategy. This week saw the first formal EU communication on #biotechnology and #biomanufacturing in two decades. Other countries and regions have been making rapid advancements in these areas. It is important that the excellent bioscience being developed in Europe has a mechanism to reach real world innovation and this is where the Communication from the European Commission with its 8 key actions can play an important role. Biotechnology and biomanufacturing have significant potential to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable planet and people, including in the agriculture, food, forestry and bioeconomy areas. In a week where CRISPR was proven to eliminate HIV from infected cells, which could pave the way for a potential cure, the Communication from the Commission was timely.

Introducing the members of the European Biosolutions Coalition: Federchimica Assobiotec 🇮🇹 The Italian Association for the Development of Biotechnology, Assobiotec represents beyond 120 companies and science and technology parks operating in healthcare and bioeconomy which includes agriculture, industry, and environment. Assobiotec was first established in 1986 as part of Federchimica, the Italian Federation of the Chemical Industry. Its mission is to encourage and support Biotech innovation. 🤝 Why did Assobiotec join the European Biosolutions Coalition? Vice-President, Mrs. Elena Sgaravatti puts it like this: "Our membership to the newly-born European Biosolution Coalition is intended to be a contribution that the National Association of Italian Biotechnology also makes to bring down the many cultural and regulatory barriers that are leaving Europe on the margins of a global revolution: the biorevolution, on which building the future of the Planet." Did you know? ♻️ In 2017 the Italian Government promoted the development of a National Strategy for the Bioeconomy (BIT), updated in 2019 (BIT II) to interconnect the pillars of the national bioeconomy more efficiently: the production of renewable biological resources, their conversion into valuable food/feed, biobased products and bioenergy, and the transformation and valorisation of organic waste streams. 💶 In 2022, the set of activities connected to the bioeconomy in Italy, of which biotechnology is the driver of innovation, generated a production value of 415.3 billion euros, employing around two million people. The Italian bioeconomy accounts for 11% of the total value of production, a clear increase compared to 9.9% in 2019. 🔬 The centrality of biotechnology as a driver for the development and for the innovation of the entire country has been more and more recognised by the Italian Government. The Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy is working on a National strategy for the development of biotechnology. Moreover, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy has recently kicked off a working table dedicated to the internationalization of the biotech sector. Great work Peter! Milestone moment. For the first time since 2002 the European Commission addresses how to harness the potential of biotechnology and biomanufacturing for health, climate, biobased industries critical to competitiveness, climate and communities. Very energised to see the #Bioeconomy Strategy will be updated in 2025 bridging regions, innovation, environment, industry. To align the biosphere and economy we need to build with nature.
