Sustainable Energy: IISc Finds Breakthrough Biocatalyst:- In a step towards sustainable energy, researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have engineered a biocatalyst — use of living systems or their parts to speed up chemical reactions — that efficiently converts fatty acids into promising biofuels. IISc Friday said this development could revolutionise the production of “drop-in” biofuels, which are compatible with existing fuel infrastructure. “The team from our Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry (IPC), led by assistant professor Debasis Das, has created an enzymatic platform that transforms abundant and inexpensive fatty acids into valuable hydrocarbons called 1-alkenes. These compounds show great potential as sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels and are widely used in polymer, detergent, and lubricant industries,” IISc said. This breakthrough not only addresses the growing need for sustainable fuel alternatives but also opens up possibilities for producing other important chemicals like styrene. With a patent application in progress, the researchers are now seeking industry collaborators to scale up their platform for mass production. The Department of Biotechnology jointly with Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) will be hosting a #Webinar Series on #Biofoundry and #Biomanufacturing Initiative starting from 14th November. The Union Cabinet chaired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the Department of Biotechnology #DBT BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy for ‘Fostering High Performance Biomanufacturing’ on 24th August 2024. This Policy lays down the framework for the implementation of the #Biofoundry and #Biomanufacturing Initiative. This initiative will promote green growth in the country, by transforming today's consumptive manufacturing paradigm to the one based on regenerative principles. The unsustainable pattern of material consumption, resource over-utilization and waste generation has led to climate change related challenges such as burning forest, melting glaciers and declining biodiversity. #Biomanufacturing can provide a solution to several of these challenges by leveraging living systems coupled with engineering to produce commercially important bio-based products using biomass and waste resources. The policy will promote an integrated approach towards promoting circular economy for Green, Clean and Prosperous India”. Bridging the Gap: Industry & Academia Collaboration in Biosciences “In the world of biosciences, collaboration between industry and academia is crucial. However, there are challenges. Industry and academia often view things differently, and at times, there’s a disconnect. This can lead to negative conversations when it comes to intellectual property (IP). The challenge lies in finding common ground and fostering open dialogue.” Additionally, the food technology and biotechnology sectors still face slow research cycles, with limited scalable innovations emerging. To overcome this, there needs to be greater emphasis on execution, along with strong pilot plants in academic institutes to bridge the gap with industry needs. Targeted collaboration, where both industry and academia set clear goals, is essential for driving scalable results. Moreover, government support through funding and policy implementation will further accelerate progress. “A positive shift is already happening. Research outputs from Indian institutes are on the rise, thanks to the introduction of metrics like INRFA rankings, which incentivize higher-quality research. This should be extended to include industry performance as well. Creating a holistic ecosystem that fosters both academic and industrial growth will benefit not only the biosciences but also other sectors like biofuels and coal.” The introduction of the Biopic 3 policy for biofuels is a game changer. It’s the right time for industry, academia, and policy to come together, ensuring that policies are implemented effectively, and solutions are scaled. “The key takeaway: Collaboration is the cornerstone of progress. This #research is a breakthrough as it demonstrates that #biomethanol, derived from #bacteria feeding on #methane and #carbondioxide, can be a viable alternative to #fossilfuels. Unlike conventional biofuels that rely on crops and create competition with food production, our method uses #greenhousegases, avoiding the ‘#foodvsfuel’ issue. It is an environmentally and #economically viable solution, utilising inexpensive resources while contributing to emissions reduction,” said Prof Debasish Das, Dept. of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.

It was a great pleasure to share my thoughts on industry-academia collaborations within the biosciences sector at CII’s Annual Summit on Technology, Intellectual Property & Industry-Academia Partnerships. I emphasized the crucial need for these collaborations and discussed the importance of aligning interests, especially regarding intellectual property and differing research cycles, to achieve success. I also highlighted the significant potential of the BioE3 Policy in fostering stronger partnerships between industry and academia. Now is truly the right time for all of us to unite and create groundbreaking solutions that can position India as a global leader in the bioeconomy. A big thanks to CII for facilitating this session, and to Rajiv Tandon, Aniket Gandhi, Dr. Neeraj Sinha and Vivek Prasad for the enlightening conversations!
