The Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalition proudly announces its inaugural Construction Summer Camp for middle school girls, aimed at breaking down gender barriers in the construction industry and fostering a new generation of empowered builders. "By collaborating with local schools, businesses, and legislators, we aim to promote the trades as a viable and rewarding career option for the next generation," said Doug Ford, the president of the Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalition. The camp is set to take place on July 22-26 at the Whitbeck Construction Education Center in Gansevoort. "By hosting this unique camp tailored specifically for middle school girls, we aim to cultivate their interest in construction early on, providing them with the skills, confidence, and support they need to pursue rewarding careers in this traditionally male-dominated field," said Ford. Campers will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and learn how math, technology, science, and design apply to construction. They will tour local businesses and contraction sites. The camp culminates in a Construction Olympics. Building projects include: tool boxes, dog houses, garden boxes, and bird houses. The Construction Summer Camp is open to middle school girls who are entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the 2024-25 school year. No prior construction experience required. Spaces are limited, so interested parents and guardians are encouraged to register their daughters early to secure their spots. "Living through a construction project, whether at home or in our schools, can be challenging. In Worthington, we’re experiencing this firsthand with the construction of our two high schools. While it may feel like a bit of a pain now, it’s all about creating the best possible environment for our students and staff in the long run." Read more about the district construction projects in the latest blog post from Superintendent Trent Bowers. #ItsWorthIt

One of our client's campus had outgrown its facility, and a replacement was necessary due to existing site grades and other complications. Below is an example of planning for successful phasing to allow an elementary school to function while construction is being completed. * Phase 1 - Relocation & Removal, Add Core Facilities: Set a temporary playground on the ball field and remove four portable buildings to provide a two-story facility with core spaces and ten classrooms. * Phase 2- Demolition & Removal, Add New Classroom Wing: Begin demolishing gymnasium, cafeteria, kitchen and portables, and relocate users to the existing structure. Core functions can transfer to the new facility. * Phase 3- Demolition, Add New Playground: Demolish the existing building to leave space for a new playground. Expand the north parking lot to provide parking for visitors on the south side, along with a kindergarten drop-off. New buildings will tie in with the existing kindergarten building to create a well-organized and safe environment for students teachers while keeping the neighborhood aesthetic. #VA_Architects

Summer Sprint for School Construction is On for Erickson-Hall CONSTRUCTION: Escondido Co. Thrives in Niche Industry BY RAY HUARD ESCONDIDO – Erickson-Hall Construction Company is in the midst of what company President Mat Gates calls a summer sprint of school construction projects in Southern California, including two in San Diego County. “We’re pushing upwards of about $100 million of work,” Gates said. Since its founding in 1998 with a staff of four, the employee-owned company has grown to have 212 employees and has become a powerhouse in school construction from new buildings to renovations. “Doing schools is a niche industry. The requirements in California are extensive, and we’ve been a school builder since the very beginning and we were building schools with other companies as we were coming up through the trades,” Gates said. Of the $3.5 billion in construction projects that Erickson-Hall has completed, $3 billion has been for K-12 and higher education projects. Gates said that 30% to 35% of the company’s annual revenue comes from school projects that it does during the summer. This summer, the company has seven school projects under way, including nearly $30 million of work at Albert Einstein Academy Charter School for San Diego Unified School District and a $9 million library modernization project at Eastlake High School for the Sweetwater Union High School District. The Eastlake work is particularly challenging because it has to be done quickly, Gates said. “We’ve got about six, seven weeks to get it done,” Gates said. “We’re basically stripping the library and rebuilding it, leaving the frame intact, (adding) new technology, new infrastructure, and redoing the shelving and putting it back together.” At Albert Einstein Academy, Erickson-Hall plans to complete about $8 million to $9 million of work on the overall $30 million project that Gates said would take a year to complete. “Basically, we’re prepping for a new building,” Gates said, “putting in the site work while the kids are gone.” https://lnkd.in/eyn9EjPU #construction #commercialrealestate #development #schools #building

📣Innovation Alert I spend most of my time supporting superintendents and their academic and schools' teams. Regardless of the overall focus of the work, two topics come up in almost every conversation: what matters most to improve social and economic mobility for the most marginalized students and teacher recruitment and retention. I am really excited to share that in my work with MIRIAM MONDRAGON, Superintendent of CRIPPLE CREEK-VICTOR SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. RE-1, we are working together on a solution to support economic and social mobility for the Cripple Creek-Victor Community and teacher recruitment and retention in service of improving academic outcomes. To understand the level of innovation involved, you must first understand the context. Cripple Creek-Victor School District RE-1 is a rural district with a total enrollment of approximately 400 students in preschool through twelfth grade. The median home price in Cripple Creek is $530K and the average rent is $2500 a month. The main industries in Cripple Creek-Victor are mining, hospitality/gaming, and education. There are limited options for affordable housing for families and for teachers. Miriam’s solution is taking on the housing shortage. She knows the students are talented and hungry to acquire durable skills including carpentry, plumbing, and design, maintenance, and repair of power systems. She also knows that to attract talent to staff the schools, there needs to be affordable housing available for teachers. So, Cripple Creek-Victor students will be learning how to construct homes from their teachers and folks working in the industry, on land acquired by the district, to provide affordable housing options for district employees. What does Phase 1 look like: ☑ Getting buy-in from community leaders. The mayors of Cripple Creek and Victor are both teachers in the district. ☑ Get Local Board approval. The Board President is leading the charge to find the land. ☑ Build a construction shop. ☑ Hire teachers with the experience needed to instruct the students. ☑ Acquire land. ☑ Get students interested in the course work. ☑ Find industry partners. Get permits to build on the land. Break ground. The goal is to break ground in Spring/Summer 2025. Stay tuned for updates! If you are interested in learning more or want to support the effort, please reach out! #ruralschools #communityschools #mytntp

The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) is making strides with its $350 million capital construction bond, approved by voters in 2022. This massive initiative is set to revamp aging buildings, including New Vista High School, and new construction like a much-needed elementary school in Erie. Personal reflection: As someone deeply invested in community growth and infrastructure, I find BVSD's holistic approach commendable. When I hear about asbestos removal and expanded Career and Technical Education (CTE) facilities, it resonates with the importance of providing safe and modern learning environments. Key highlights include: - $42 million in summer projects across 12 schools. - Enhancements in engineering and woodshop spaces at Centaurus High School. - New ADA-compliant playground surfaces at multiple elementary schools. - Modernized tech and art rooms, along with a centralized CTE information hub at Broomfield Heights Middle School. Questions for you: 1. How do you think infrastructure improvements impact student performance and community engagement? 2. What are some ways your community is investing in educational facilities? Investing in our schools means investing in our future. Let's support these initiatives and share ideas to foster an even brighter future for our students. #Education #CommunityDevelopment #SchoolInfrastructure #BoulderValley #BVSD #TechnicalEducation

Good to see that this scheme has now secured planning permission. Anderson Acoustics were commissioned by Oundle School in 2022 to undertake an environmental noise survey and then in 2024 a noise impact assessment including advice on noise mitigation measures required to comply with the local planning requirements. We assessed the impact from existing environmental noise levels on the building itself, and set out recommended limits to externally mounted plant items so that a detailed noise assessment of external plant can be undertaken once the selections are made. The results of the noise levels measured on site, were used to calibrate an environmental 3D model of the site to predict façade noise levels at the proposed building elevations. Looking forward to seeing the scheme take shape. #planningapplication #planningapproval #educationestates #schools #noiseimpactassessment #acousticconsultancy

Is it ever too early to showcase construction as a viable career option for kids? Meet my son, Hugo. He’s 4 years old, loves all things Marvel, DC and Paw Patrol and was recently accepted into his primary school of choice to start in September (phew!). I’ve been talking to him a lot about future career options (he says, tongue firmly in cheek). His current preference is to be a superhero, preferably Spiderman, Hulk or Iron Man but my personal favourite, ‘I want to be like my Daddy’ 😍 I had a meeting with his nursery teacher on Monday to discuss his progress as he prepares for school in September and I was told that he spends the majority of his day playing in the ‘construction corner’ outside 👷♂️ 🏗 This is a recent addition that provides children with access to (rubber) bricks, wood, signs and tools and encourages them to build and create. He’s already built a house and a shed and is absolutely loving it so to my earlier question, is this too young to get them hooked?! Absolutely not! Here at Kier Group, we are seeing some exceptionally positive stats when it comes to careers website engagement and conversion, application numbers and quality, and the diversity of the talent looking to engage with us as a prospective employer. But seeing the construction area at Hugo’s nursery got me thinking. As an industry we need to think carefully about how we keep momentum going and encourage people to join, particularly with Generation Alpha preparing to enter the workforce in the next few years. Kier Group already works closely with a large number of secondary schools, colleges and universities but is there an opportunity to engage with younger children? I fully support the addition of the construction corner and hope to see other nurseries and primary schools follow suit – let’s inspire the next generation to want to join the brilliant and exciting construction industry! #joinkier #constructionrevolution #constructionforall #lifegoals
