I conquered my fear of failure this weekend and gained the fun of failing. We took a weekend trip to Bulgaria to try skiing for the very first time. I chickened out of my skiing class on Saturday, finding a very lovely excuse to swap places with my husband. He called me with a huge smile from his ski lesson, sharing with me how he was having “so much fun!” Curiosity got the better of me. I had to try this activity that he was willing to spend 6 hours on. My class on Sunday started with my instructor reminding me, “Be brave! Come on be brave!” The first time I fell, I quickly realised I had experienced the worst, and survived. Then I fell again, and again, and again. The worst kept happening, but I found myself laughing and having fun. As I practised with my ski instructor, I realised starting in academia is a lot like learning skiing. You have to abandon the fear of failing and experience the fun in failing to have any growth. Your supervisor or coach is there to support you, so why not be brave, fail, learn and have fun? The most memorable part of my day was having my instructor remind me “I’ve got you! Now lean on the shin, relax your body! Come on, I’ve got you!” Failing is fun when you have a coach or supervisor telling you, “I’ve got you, just focus on the learning.” Learning a new skill like academic writing is fun when you’re in a space where failing is okay because it’s the most effective and fastest path to growth. If you’re looking to finally conquer the fear of academic writing, and experience the fun instead, join my coaching sprints starting the first week in April. The slots are limited and filling up fast!

I’ve just successfully completed the Safe Cycling Infrastructure technical training course run by Safe System Solutions. Why did I do this training: Each year in Australia around 40 people riding their bikes are killed and more than 4,000 are hospitalised in road crashes. Riding a bike is a sustainable, healthy and socially equitable form of transport, and we need more people riding. Unfortunately, unsafe infrastructure is a major impediment to many people riding. We can design roads to be safer. We can reduce the chance of a crash, and the severity of any that still occur. This was an intensive online technical training course with theory, coursework, and a field exercise where we put our skills into practice.

Picture this: A baby giraffe learning to walk. Or me learning to ski for the first time at 47 years young. The photo, with Mont Blanc in the background, was taken minutes before my first blue run from the top of Les grandes platières, France. A week earlier I couldn't even put on a pair of skis, let alone stand up in them. Thanks to a series of private instruction and guidance, I was able to get off the nursery slopes within a few days on and to the greens for a couple days before attempting big blue runs from the top. What I learned during my first week of skiing: 🚠 You don’t look anything like James Bond skiing when you start. You look like a baby giraffe learning to walk. True story. ⛷️ Kids learn much quicker than adults. They copy what they see and don’t over think things. They also have a shorter distance to fall. ❄️ Snow is not soft. Thanks to a brilliant tip from a customer of mine, I invested in butt crash pants (yep, they exist) which helped break a lot of the falls and prevent bruising. 🏔️ None of my many years of mountain biking and hiking skills transferred. Skiing is a whole new ball game 🎿 Private instruction is a must. I fast tracked my progress through one on one tuition and coaching from a wise and patient expert. So how does this post translate to business or the work I do? When companies scale i.e. double and triple in size, everything breaks and needs to be re-learnt. Organisational structures need to be rethought. New systems need to be implemented. New leadership skills need to be learned. And the quickest way to help navigate operational scaleup challenges is by getting expert advice from someone outside the organisation. Someone that has been there and done that, and made all the mistakes 🚀 I may have only progressed to blue runs down snowy mountains, but when it comes to helping businesses scale well, I’ve been navigating black diamond runs for years. Get in touch if you want to talk about skiing (my new favourite thing), or if you need help navigating the next stage of growth in your organisation. #scalingup #transformation #skischool101 Saltwater Consulting
