In 2024, NII took an important step toward localizing the global issue of climate change with the launch of The Climate Project, a trusted digital hub funded by Bruce Power. This initiative provides actionable insights into what a changing climate means for Bruce, Grey, and Huron counties and local Indigenous communities within Saugeen Ojibway Nation Territory. From the impact of rising air temperatures on Lake Huron’s fish to the threat of invasive species in local forests, The Climate Project delivers research and knowledge tailored to our region. Visit www.climateproject.ca to explore how climate change is shaping our air, water and land. #ClimateAction #LocalizedResearch #Environment #LakeHuron

The climate crisis is solvable. It may take hundreds of years to help nature regenerate the ecosystems that control Earth’s temperature and climate, but each step along the way will be an improvement to our lives and to planetary health. I also believe that we must reduce air pollution and address the urgent need to shift our energy infrastructure away from fossil fuels. But the solution to the climate crisis should not be confused with the solution to the energy crisis -- in many ways they are not compatible. Unfortunately, this confusion permeates our society. The climate crisis is a full blown environmental crisis that goes far beyond the burning of fossil fuels. It is caused by humanity’s ongoing destruction and rampant economic exploitation of the living Earth, humans included. This living Earth, the biosphere, is a robust and self-sustaining system that regulates its own temperature and weather patterns. It does this by cycling water through itself and through the atmosphere and back again. This biologically-modulated flow of water is both warming and cooling, creating its own temperature controlled space. Have you ever observed that those extreme weather events that we associate with the climate crisis -- severe storms, floods, droughts, heat spells, melting glaciers, desertification and wildfires -- are all about water, or the lack of water? To learn more about how life regulates the climate and how we have screwed it up, please watch my documentary Regenerating Life: How to cool the planet, feed the world, and live happily ever after. In subsequent posts I will outline a range of tried-and-true solutions to the climate crisis that are local and give everyone something to do. 🌊🌟 Exciting News Alert! We're thrilled to dive deep into groundbreaking research reshaping our climate narrative! Most leading climate reports overlook seafloor mud. It's time to change that! The seafloor is more than just mud—it's a powerhouse for organic carbon storage and is very important in combating the climate crisis. The Convex Seascape Survey is illuminating the vast potential of our ocean's untapped resources. By pinpointing and understanding global blue carbon reserves and assessing human impact, we’re setting the stage to protect and optimise these critical carbon sinks. While this isn’t a real conversation, these friend-shaped birds do face some real foes: habitat loss and climate change. 🌡️ Some researchers have noted that prolonged snow-free periods in the spring and fall, which are increasing as the climate warms, throw the timing of the Willow Ptarmigan's seasonal molts out of sync with its surroundings, making the bird an easier target for predators. ❄️ ABC is acting in three key areas — mitigation, resilience, and adaptation — to combat the effects of climate change and to help build a sustainable, long-term future for birds like Willow Ptarmigan. 🌎 Learn more at https://bit.ly/4iq9m4w.

🌿 Exciting Insights from the 2024 #NetworkNature Annual Conference! 🌿 This year’s the Conference tackled a crucial theme: busting myths in relation to ecosystem restoration and management. 💡Several pervasive myths in the field of #NatureBasedSolutions (NbS) were busted, such as: 1. Myth: Under climate change, dams are needed more than ever -> Reality: 🌍 Under climate change, free-flowing rivers are more needed than ever 2. Myth: Ponds are too small to be considered -> Reality: 💧 Ponds are too important not to be considered 3. Myth: Undisturbed forests must be the target for forest restoration ->Reality:🌳Nature-rich forests must be the target for forest restoration 4. Myth: Drained forests as climate win ->Reality:🌳Preserving and resetting forests as climate win

🍃 Our newsletter #TheHarvestingRevolution recently introduced a dedicated section on Climate Change news. In our latest edition, an article explores How Temperate Forests Could Help Limit Climate Change. "Much of the conservation and climate change spotlight falls on tropical forests. Given this, people might forget that forests in temperate areas—those found in large parts of North America, Europe, and higher latitudes in Asia and Australia—also have the power to help limit climate change. As much as preserving tropical rainforests is indispensable to climate progress, policymakers cannot ignore the critical role of temperate forests." In a brief 3-minute video, the focus is on natural climate solutions. The video discusses how improved conservation and management of forests, wetlands, and farmland could contribute one-third of the emission reductions required by 2030 to limit temperature increases to below 2°C (3.6°F). The animation highlights the potential impact of these measures on combating climate change. See link below COURTESY of The Nature Conservancy https://lnkd.in/dXtGkQy7

Invasive species threaten climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, amplifying stress on ecosystems and communities. Shockingly, only 8 out of 26 US federal climate adaptation plans in 2021 mentioned invasive species, with just 4 considering their impacts meaningfully. 🔬 To bridge this gap, a research team conducted a gap analysis in 2023 and proposed 5 key recommendations for the 2024 plan revisions. This initiative, part of the Natural Climate Solutions team, aims to protect forest carbon storage from invasive pests and pathogens. These recommendations are also valuable for state, local, and international climate resilience policies.
