Robust regulatory arrangements are critical in professionalising rural water supply and sanitation and small water supply services and, in turn, accelerating progress toward meeting SDG 6. A small number of countries (e.g. Tanzania, Rwanda and Zambia) have taken important steps to begin expanding regulatory activities to cover rural water supply and sanitation and small water supplies. However, the effective regulation of these services remains a critical gap across Africa and globally. Within this context, we are excited to announce that the ESAWAS regulators association has commissioned Aguaconsult, in collaboration with a set of experienced national consultants and regulatory experts, to develop a regulatory framework and strategy for rural WSS services and small water supplies. https://lnkd.in/eYszRUVv

An enumerator discusses the Diare mechanized borehole system operation with a member of the Diare Water and Sanitation Management Team (WSMT) in the Northern Region of Ghana. WSMTs represent Ghana’s approach to #community-based management and, as such, are one service provider responsible for the operation and maintenance of rural and peri-urban water supply and sanitation infrastructure. #Aquaya leads the Research and Learning Agenda to fill knowledge gaps related to the economics of rural water supply and the required investments to improve service delivery for the #EnWASH program. The work shown here demonstrates our efforts to document and describe the financial health of piped water systems in rural #Ghana and explore the drivers of #financial and #service delivery performance. 🌊: https://ow.ly/ZT6250R94JN USAID | USAID Global Waters | Global Communities | Global Communities - Ghana | Safe Water Network | Water4 | Deloitte | WaterAid | Total Family Health Organisation | The Manoff Group

The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev's discussions from Benue State focused on enhancing collaboration with the Federal Government to promote Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives, particularly regarding WASH and sanitation programs. They also emphasized the need to rehabilitate dams in the state to improve water resource management and ensure sustainable access to clean water for local communities. This is a good step for all of Nigeria's 36 states to focus on ensuring SDG 6 is achieved. Funding is crucial and we have positioned ourselves as a Water and Sanitation management Utility company to provide SPV service through a PPP model with our government and private sectors. #Nigeria #WaterSupplymanagement #wastewatermanagementutility

On 22 June 2024, Rand Water embarks on a 37-day maintenance regime that will see days-long water disruptions hitting parts of Gauteng on a set schedule. The taste of water shedding in Tshwane is already plaguing the residents due to the dire need for extensive proactive maintenance of South Africa's water infrastructure. This can only be achieved with the government and the private sector working together. "Mergence Investment Managers (MIM) is the only asset manager with a stake in the two privately owned water concessions in South Africa, Siza Water in KwaZulu Natal and Silulumanzi in Limpopo, by means of a Public Private Partnership we have with SA Water Works (SAWW). Siza Water celebrated its 25th anniversary in March 2024 and the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo lauded the project which has recently received Green Drop certification and supplies free water daily to 450,000 customers, 300,000 of whom are served classified as indigent communities. It is no secret that “water-shedding” in parts of South Africa is looking increasingly likely. We commend the government on establishing the Water Partnership Office in the Development Bank of SA to bring together the Department of Water and Sanitation, National Treasury, other departments, and financiers to work together with municipalities on long-term solutions. We believe the SAWW-Mergence PPP model could be replicated nationwide." ~ Sholto Dolamo, Managing Director MIM #Impact #Investing #Public #Private #Partnership #ESG #Sustainable #People #Planet #Profit #PPP

#WaterMission is proud to work alongside #RUWASA, the Ministry of Water, and #USAID Tanzania in the Water Quality Assurance Fund (WQAF) initiative in Tanzania! This research is the product of an agreement that will promote best practices in water quality testing and safety management for rural communities to ensure water quality in Manyara. Read this report of the baseline data we collected earlier this year with our partners, #Aquaya. https://lnkd.in/dHjsznJp The Water Quality #AssuranceFund bridges the urban-rural divide and enables established urban laboratories to provide water quality testing services to rural water systems. It makes monitoring rural water systems more attractive to urban water quality laboratories. #REALWater is evaluating this model in Tanzania to promote water quality testing in rural areas. Here is a detailed factsheet about the #AssuranceFund in Tanzania: https://ow.ly/4nOk50SS1IC"

African Development Bank Group and ESAWAS regulators association hosted a webinar on Strengthening the regulatory role in water and sanitation financing. A strong legal and regulatory framework is crucial for attracting private sector investment in WSS. The webinar highlighted the importance of strengthening the regulatory role in sector finance, including investment planning, funding strategies, and sector-wide coordination. The webinar comes on the back of calls by service providers for regulators to support the viability of institutions and bankability of projects. This was at the recently held first Service Provider-Regulator Engagement Platform, which brought together 11 regulators and 22 service providers from across Africa. The service providers unanimously requested for the development of a water supply and sanitation tariff index for Africa, as well as a Creditworthiness Rating Index for WSS utilities across the continent - which ESAWAS and African Water and Sanitation Association _ Association Africaine de l'Eau et de l'Assainissement are looking to partner on. 📢 INTEGRITY AND REGULATION IN SANITATION Improving integrity and regulation in Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) is key to promoting delivery of better services that leave no one behind. This positively contributes to Zambia's efforts in attaining objectives of SDG no. 6. In this regard, the Water Integrity Network (WIN) held a two (2) day workshop in Kigali, Rwanda (31st July, 1st Aug 2024), focused on addressing aspects of integrity and regulation in sanitation. I was privileged to make a presentation at the workshop in which I highlighted some of the integrity challenges Zambia is facing and how we are addressing them. #To improved service provision and regulation.
