Why the use of quotation marks in "failures"? First, apparent failures are extremely important occasions to correct biases and pre-assumptions, embed learnings, strengthen existing approaches, and adjust the planned trajectories for lab design and delivery. As a matter of fact, many labs were precisely created as safe spaces to try, fail and improve. Not even the end of a lab means failure, some might transform into new units or leave institutional and cultural legacies as planned, while others might evolve in specialised innovation and tech units. From the review of an extensive collection of 137 cases, plenty of practitioners' insights and a pile of specialized literature, we have identified 12 traps that innovation labs may run into and present 12 examples of how to dodge them. Yesterday as part of the Northstar Network LLC Fellowship, I participated in a workshop with Yoni Stern of SIT Innovation - Systematic Inventive Thinking ®on Innovation. It was a really fantastic presentation rooted in both psychological research and SIT's experience working with organizations across the globe. A couple of the takeaways: 💡 Subject matter experts have more fixedness - a state of mind in which an object or situation is perceived in one specific way, to the exclusion of any alternative. Innovation is about breaking that fixedness. 💡 The Closed World principle, which states that when innovating we should only use elements that currently exist within the system. 💡 As we examine new ideas, they might seem silly at the outset, but we should seek to not change what makes sense, but make sense out of what we change. Thanks for the presentation, and also for the cheat sheets. These will get put to good use!

🌟 Reflecting on the World Open Innovation Conference 2024 🌟 The World Open Innovation Community held its annual conference on 6 and 7 November. Judging from the massive online postings and comments of the attendees and speakers, the event was very successful. Marcel Bogers, Conference Chair, is proud: “We welcomed 165 attendees from 35 countries, with more than 100 presenters in over 50 sessions, truly representing a global engagement”, he says with pride, “We gathered a diverse group of innovators, researchers, and industry leaders to explore the latest trends and breakthroughs in open innovation.” “The conference offered insightful keynotes by Henry Chesbrough, Carliss Baldwin, and Tim Luker, a panel on open innovation in the healthcare ecosystem, with a.o. Nobel prize winner Randy Schekman, and interactive workshops, all aimed at fostering knowledge sharing between research and practice. We explored topics such as the human side of open innovation, the dynamics of innovation ecosystems, and the societal impact of collaborative approaches. For me personally, it was particularly inspiring to see how open innovation can address grand challenges and drive sustainable development.” Next year’s conference will be in Bilbao, Spain. Policymakers and economic developers may want to pause there to consider possible implications of the findings: a merely large regional presence of employment within a particular technology area may meet the standard definition of a cluster, but if there isn’t R&D and innovation occurring in those local plants, the cluster’s future competitiveness is less secure because it is being driven by innovation occurring elsewhere. The companies also need to be networked externally to other technology hubs or clusters. Note: building more robust and sustainable regional innovation will be the goal of many sessions at SSTI’s annual conference Dec. 10-12 in Metro Phoenix. Are you an open innovation scholar and want something short for a weekend read (or more likely, for next week)? 🤓 We just got to know that the "Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management" will be published next year as fully open access. This means that we can start disseminating our chapters also a bit more freely - hooray open science! ✅ We wrote a short chapter labelled "OPEN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS" co-authored with Llewellyn D W Thomas. Here is the open access version (the official book chp follows next year): https://lnkd.in/d-3iBtdA This chapter discusses the relatively new notion in open innovation literature - the open innovation ecosystem - which extends the discussion of OI also to the "outside-out" dynamics of innovation. This is an important extension, since the focal innovators and entrepreneurs should certainly care what happens beyond their immediate reach - that is - between actors that are "outside" their typical collaboration boundary. Pioneers in making sense of the open innovation ecosystem lens and the outside-out dynamics include Henry Chesbrough, Tobias Gutmann, Christopher "Micki" Chochoiek, Wim Vanhaverbeke, Victor Gilsing & Joel West, among others.
