🌟 Reflecting on the World Open Innovation Conference 2024 🌟 The World Open Innovation Community held its annual conference on 6 and 7 November. Judging from the massive online postings and comments of the attendees and speakers, the event was very successful. Marcel Bogers, Conference Chair, is proud: “We welcomed 165 attendees from 35 countries, with more than 100 presenters in over 50 sessions, truly representing a global engagement”, he says with pride, “We gathered a diverse group of innovators, researchers, and industry leaders to explore the latest trends and breakthroughs in open innovation.” “The conference offered insightful keynotes by Henry Chesbrough, Carliss Baldwin, and Tim Luker, a panel on open innovation in the healthcare ecosystem, with a.o. Nobel prize winner Randy Schekman, and interactive workshops, all aimed at fostering knowledge sharing between research and practice. We explored topics such as the human side of open innovation, the dynamics of innovation ecosystems, and the societal impact of collaborative approaches. For me personally, it was particularly inspiring to see how open innovation can address grand challenges and drive sustainable development.” Next year’s conference will be in Bilbao, Spain. 📢 Out right now! 📝 New blog: The Devious Dozen: 12 fallacies behind innovation lab "failures" (https://lnkd.in/g6D--JXr) Take a look at the new blog from my colleague Benjamin Kumpf and me on 12 reasons behind innovation lab "failures". Why the use of quotation marks in "failures"? First, apparent failures are extremely important occasions to correct biases and pre-assumptions, embed learnings, strengthen existing approaches, and adjust the planned trajectories for lab design and delivery. As a matter of fact, many labs were precisely created as safe spaces to try, fail and improve. Not even the end of a lab means failure, some might transform into new units or leave institutional and cultural legacies as planned, while others might evolve in specialised innovation and tech units. From the review of an extensive collection of 137 cases, plenty of practitioners' insights and a pile of specialized literature, we have identified 12 traps that innovation labs may run into and present 12 examples of how to dodge them. Powerful cases from amazing innovation labs around the world. Learnings and tips from all continents: 🇿🇦#SouthAfrica (Centre for Public Service Innovation), 🇧🇷 #Brazil (Enap/Gnova and LabHacker - Laboratorio Brasileiro De Cultura Digital), 🇵🇹 #Portugal (AMA - Agência para a Modernização Administrativa, IP/LabX - Centro para a Inovação no Setor Público), 🇧🇩 #Bangladesh (a2i), 🇨🇵 #France (La 27e Région), 🇨🇱 #Chile (Laboratorio de Gobierno), 🇦🇺 #Australia (The Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI)), 🇵🇪 #Peru (Secretaría de Gobierno y Transformación Digital de la Presidencia del Consejo de Ministros/Red Nacional de Laboratorios de Innovación), 🇨🇭 #Switzerland (staatslabor), 🇺🇸 #UnitedStatesofAmerica (GSA @18F), 🇳🇿 #NewZealand (Service Innovation Lab). Great insights yesterday at the eighth Aalto University alumni strategy circle after-work event on outbound open innovation, corporate venturing and deeptech spin-offs. Thanks to our panelists: Wim Vanhaverbeke, Lotta Partanen, Tarun Sharma and Inka Mero! Here just a few issues for corporates, research organizations and investors to consider to successfully get new businesses and ventures off the ground ▫ It's an ecosystem challenge: don't only think about customers but also complementors and partners as well as platforms to plug into ▫ Talent and teams matter: get the right people into the venture, especially consider the role and experience of the commercial people, and consider the role of the scientists and inventors in the venture ▫ Carefully consider ownership: make sure the spin-off is investable by external investors, ownership rewards actual contribution to building the business, and the key people own a large enough share Thanks to Markku Maula for organizing and running the event! The strategy circle events are organized by Aalto TUTA - Aalto University, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management. The topics of corporate venturing and spinoffs are of key interest to our department, as we have been working on these topics for over 20 years. Stay tuned for the next strategy circle events in autumn. #aaltoalumni #openinnovation #deeptech #spinoffs

Great insights shared at the Continuous Innovation Network (CINet) conference at Hamburg University of Technology this week! In the introduction of the CINet conference this year, Prof. John Bessant pointed to that word “innovation” is on everyone’s lips just about everywhere nowadays. Innovation is found to be a solution to everything from succeeding with start-ups to solving the challenges of humanity, however it is important that the word “innovation” is not just becoming a hollow buzzword but is filled with meaning and action. 💡 A great keynote by Prof. Elke Schüssler on how to organize collaborative innovation online and offline kicked off the conference highlighting that in order to succeed with innovation collaboration “The ego must always be able to be withheld. So, if you always want to assert yourself, then it’s definitely not advisable to work in a team”. During the conference I also got the opportunity to listen to a great presentation on challenges in implementing new technologies in B2B settings by my fellow PhD student at Karlstad University Pritam Kumar Padhi, co-authored with his advisors Johan Netz and Peter R. Magnusson. Among key takeaways I had the opportunity to talk venture builder research with Francesca Capella, and listen to Dr. Lysander Weiss on venture clienting, which is an interesting and novel form of nurturing innovation in corporations. Thanks also to Peder Veng Søberg for being a great discussant on my two paper contributions on #venturebuilders. Thank you to the organizers for a great conference! 👇 Do you feel that your workplace merely use innovation as a buzzword, or do you have a strategic plan and activities on how to work properly with innovation? #innovation #cinet #collaboration #research _____________________ Did you like this post? Dear Network, A breeding ground for disruptive innovations. Or at least that’s what Brussels bets on as it tries to open up its fast growing tech market to attract more supporters from outside, advance its innovation ecosystems, and take Europe’s economy to the next level. 4 Weeks ago, the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth – Mariya Gabriel, introduced the first-ever European Innovation Days to Silicon Valley. The idea – to showcase the diversity of the European innovation ecosystem and attract foreign investors and talent. Commissioner Gabriel was joined by a high-level delegation of over 50 EU corporates, university rectors, mayors of member-states municipalities, investors, and entrepreneurs. Together, they presented opportunities for growth under the New European Innovation Agenda. The New European Innovation Agenda was adopted in July 2022 and it aims to position Europe at the forefront of deeptech innovation. This vision can help Europe develop and bring to the market new technologies to address. Very interesting read and certainly exciting times ahead. Many thanks, Jon #brussels #tech #siliconvalley

📣 The Playbook for Network Innovation is live. The Playbook for Network Innovation forms part of Innovate UK’s commitment to support new and exciting innovations. It is not a step-by-step guide to running an innovation project, but a ‘book of previous plays’ that will help you navigate some of the complexities of network innovation and give you pointers to increase your chances of success. It also signposts you to other initiatives and resources from across the network innovation sector. More work is needed to explore their impact, learning from both previous and future innovation projects - including yours. The Playbook marks the first step in what will become a regular process to gather and share insights on the factors influencing innovation success. 🎣 How do we foster innovation through external collaborations? Prior to engaging the ecosystem of experts in extensive knowledge-sharing and insights gathering from knowledge platforms, I concur that selecting the right Open Innovation (OI) mechanisms is crucial, taking into account project complexity [Bagherzadeh, 2024]. A practical framework tailored to project-level dynamics is outlined in 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟕 “𝐴𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑂𝐼 𝑀𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑠𝑚𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝐴𝑡𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑏𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠”, as discussed by Mehdi Bagherzadeh during the enlightening #OIThursday hosted by Marisol Menendez (link: https://lnkd.in/dixF6Vcd). Thanks to targeted OI 𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 actions, corporates engaged in open R&D (innovation seekers) can identify potential solution-providers with specialized expertise, often beyond the reach of traditional crowdsourcing methods (𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 open calls). Turning to the knowledge-sharing (by innovation providers) … kudos to Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy for backing KNOWLEDGE SHARE -Where Innovation Happens, a platform aggregating and showcasing almost all patents, discoveries, startups and spin-off companies emerging from 🇮🇹 Italian public research. Remarkable effort by Shiva Loccisano, Tech Transfer Expert and the whole team (+ Erre Quadro)! 👏🏻 KNOWLEDGE SHARE -Where Innovation Happens is a joint venture involving Associazione Netval, UIBMS and Politecnico di Torino. Thanks to Nicoletta Amodio Fondazione Mai Confindustria, and nicola michelon massimo barbin Confindustria Veneto Est for hosting the presentation event yesterday in Padova. Looking forward to see this best practice embracing further international TTO inputs and implementing #OIwall for even more effective 𝐊 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 for the sake of 🇪🇺 #EUResearch and global businesses! #shapingthefuture #openinnovation #innovationmanagement #absorptivecapacity #boundaryspanning #innovationscouting #IPvalorisation #techtransfer #infinitearea

What am I looking forward to at IIEX NA in Austin April 17 - 18th? https://lnkd.in/em9B7mpW For those who may be attending IIEX for the first time, IIEX’s origin story dates back over 10 years ago, with the ambition to create an exchange of ideas amongst key stakeholders and emerging talents across the entire insights ecosystem. The goal was to surface the innovations that would keep the industry vibrant and capable of delivering value to all the brands and clients we serve. It is often said that if an innovation emerged in the last decade and became a best practice, you probably saw it first at an IIEX event. What do I look forward to, specifically this year? · Great Speakers. As always, the sessions are expertly curated by the Greenbook content team, in themes easy to navigate based on specific areas of interest, or the dynamic speakers talking about them. I am particularly looking forward to hearing from Mark Earls, the Herdmeister, who will share his thoughts on “mental time travel”, and all things social and behavioral. But there are so many others, including not to miss presentations from partners lead by title sponsor The Logit Group, Inc. IIEX NA 2024 includes some familiar faces, many new players making their commercial entrance as well as innovative end clients. Check out sessions on AI, Sample and Data Quality, Digital Transformation, CX/UX and Behavioral Science. · 2024 Future List honorees. This Greenbook competition annually identifies practitioners with less than 10 years of experience who have distinguished themselves through expertise and individual contributions to help the industry stay strong. Several of the '24 roster are speaking at IIEX; I have the privilege of moderating a fireside chat with two of them: Erik Fraser and Elizabeth Kadrich. Check out all the honorees https://lnkd.in/ehNpN7YZ . · The Insights Innovation Competition. This is a live face off in which finalists literally compete for the prestige of being recognized as true insights innovators, a cash prize and consultation services to support growth. Don’t miss the Day One presentations and the crowd-sourced voting to make YOUR selection (only open to live attendees at IIEX) for the winner. Check out the finalists (Bounce Insights, Fairgen, Listen Labs, Orchard, and Woxi)! And be sure to cast your vote! · Catching up and Networking. There is a “Networking Made Easy” feature at IIEX so if you are looking for me, Susan Griffin, and/or Suann Griffin (yes there are two of us!), or my good friend Matt Valle, who hosts the Rock N’ Roll Research Podcast, or William Leach, probably one of the leading experts on how to put the principles of behavioral science to work, or other attendees, we will all be easy to spot. And I am dreaming of Food Trucks! I am looking forward to Austin & IIEX, and seeing you there. If you haven’t booked a ticket yet, use my code for a discount! SUSAN30!
