This week, I attended at International DSM Conference 2024 in Stuttgart in collaboration with the summit of Advanced Systems Engineering (ASE) on behalf of BINZ Automotive and TUM Institute of Flight System Dynamics. The conference took part at my former employer Fraunhofer IAO. Moreover, I could visit the TTI Technologie-Transfer-Initiative GmbH, which is an important facility for start-ups in Germany. From my point of view, new trends are 1) Saving time: DSM architecture drafts via artificial intelligence (AI), 2) Being sustainable: Identifying sustainable product architectures & metalevel life cycle models, 3) Beyond organisation: Grouping of employees who actually would have not worked together in early product development phase, 4) Advanced systems engineering: From data to outcome to model with the goal of an improved outcome, 5) Sensitive systems and process chains: Risk management in complex systems, 6) Data-driven model-based systems engineering (DDMBSE). Due to an own formal mistake, I couldn´t submit papers. The originally planned paper has been assigned as pre-print to a journal. It is “A Free Hospital-Helipad-Air Rescue Station-Web Map Service”. 📢 CSD&M PARIS 2024 - SPEAKER Heinrich Wagner, research assistant and doctoral candidate at Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences will present: "A Novel Approach to Simulation Model Reuse in SysML: Industrial Applications and PLE Methodologies". Nowadays, complex systems in industries such as aerospace, railway, or automotive are developed through Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). This methodology results in the creation of numerous interlinked development artifacts. However, projects often undergo similar cycles and generate similar artifacts, leading to redundant efforts across different lifecycle phases and different projects. This redundancy can be reduced if development artifacts are reused in multiple projects and various lifecycle phases. This work focuses on the reuse of library elements in both SysML models for specification purposes and simulation models and the reuse of architectures specified in SysML to create simulation models efficiently. To make such a reuse possible, a concept is developed. For this reason, the research explores the extent to which Product Line Engineering (PLE) methods can be applied to generate efficiently various architectures reusing the components of the asset library and to compare the architectures by performing simulations. Our Editors are working on the frontiers of mobility research. Kevin Bai and Srikanth Pilla spoke with SAE International about their new patents with promising applications for more #sustainable automotive industry practices. Kevin remarked, “Working on OEMs and their suppliers gives me the opportunity to learn how to publish both a technical paper and a patent within an industry setting.” Kevin and Srikanth were both included on the list of the world’s top 2% of scientists (compiled by Stanford University researchers). Srikanth Pilla, Editor-in-Chief of the SAE International Journal of Sustainable Transportation, Energy, Environment, & Policy, is currently the Director of the UD Center For Composite Materials at the University of Delaware. He is also the Founding Director of ‘AIM for Composites’, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funded Energy Frontier Research Center. His current research interests are in the fundamentals and applications of sustainable and lightweight functional materials and manufacturing. Pilla has co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed archival publications. Hua “Kevin” Bai, Associate Editor of the SAE International Journal of Electrified Vehicles, is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University in 2007. His current research interests include power electronics (particularly wide-bandgap devices) with motor drives, electric vehicle battery chargers, auxiliary power modules and battery energy storage systems.
