In a recent Windpower Monthly article, our colleague Sorcha Versteeg, Country Director, UK and Ireland, shared her perspective on Sweden’s “open-door” approach to offshore wind leasing and the recent cancellation of 13 offshore wind projects due to security concerns. ⚠️
Sorcha highlighted how this developer-led strategy, which contrasts with the government-managed bidding rounds seen in other Baltic countries, did not effectively integrate critical considerations such as military, biodiversity, and local industry requirements.
"The developer-led approach of choosing wind farm locations has just failed to effectively engage with the military, biodiversity, and local industry requirements... With Sweden joining NATO earlier this year, it’s not unexpected that defence concerns would take precedence over renewable energy development," Sorcha explained. 💬
