Comment by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on violence in #Myanmar’s #RakhineState " I am deeply alarmed by reports of renewed violence and property destruction in Buthidaung township in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state, resulting in the displacement of potentially tens of thousands of civilians, mainly Rohingya. With inter-communal tensions between ethnic Rakhine and #Rohingya high – and being actively stoked by the military – this is a critical period when the risk of yet further atrocity crimes is particularly acute. While we seek to corroborate information indicating serious violations, I appeal directly to the Myanmar military and Arakan Army to pause the fighting, protect civilians, allow immediate and unhindered humanitarian access, and comply fully and unconditionally with international law – including the measures already ordered by the International Court of Justice for the protection of #Rohingya. The PSC after the addition of the situation in #Sudan to the agenda of its 1213 session of 21 May adopted the following statement which tasks the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights to investigate the situation in Darfur, and the High-Level Panel & AU Special Envoy for prevention of Genocide to propose a plan on protection of civilians in Sudan. #KeepEyesOnSudan

Chaos Report: It's the Human Dignity, Stupid: The Way Forward on Balochistan People can survive without basic necessities, but when their dignity is stripped away, there is little left to live for. Any solution in Balochistan must be centred around restoring human dignity, which will require demilitarized approach to the province. It doesn't take much to understand that the short-term security and political goals of Islamabad and its allies cannot trump the long-term development goals of Balochistan and its people. The uneven development and inequitable distribution of resources that result from this short-sighted approach can amplify regional disparities and grievances within Pakistan. Certain provinces or communities may feel that they are being exploited or neglected by the central government, leading to the strengthening of centrifugal forces and secessionist sentiments. This can ultimately threaten the territorial integrity and national unity of Pakistan, as different factions vie for a greater share of the limited resources.

#Ethiopia: A significant rift is deepening within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), as the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) rejected the party's request to reinstate its legal status but registered TPLF as a party under a “special condition.” The rejection to reinstate TPLF’s legal status, based on legal barriers preventing the reinstatement of parties involved in acts of violence, has sparked further division within the TPLF.  On one side of the faction, TPLF’s chairman Debretsion Gebremichael and its group is challenging the decision of NEBE, while the other faction led by Getachew Reda, head of the Interim Regional Administration of Tigray, seeks to reform the party and work with the federal government. 1) After the Myanmar military forcibly conscripted Rohingya youths, the Arakan Army (AA) also compelled Rohingya youths to join them. Both groups will deploy Rohingya on the battlefield, leading to Rohingyas fighting each other at the frontline? #RohingyaNeedProtection 2) Both the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) are using Rohingya villages as battlefields. We can't even count how many Rohingya have been killed in the shelling or died and abducted while running to save their lives. #RohingyaNeedProtection 3) According to the situation on the ground for the Rohingya, both the Junta & the Arakan Army (AA) are not complying with the provisional measures ordered by the Int'l Court of Justice (ICJ). They both violate International Humanitarian Law (IHL). #RohingyaNeedProtection 4) Denying the identity of the Rohingya and labelling them as “Bengali” is a serious violation of human rights. If this basic human right isn't respected, the future of the Rohingya are at a significant risk. #RohingyaNeedProtection 5) On April 17, the Arakan Army (AA) abducted 5 Rohingya civilians from Tha Yet Oak village in Maungdaw. Their dead bodies were discovered on April 22. AA has restricted the villagers from retrieving the bodies. #RohingyaNeedProtection 6) Everyday, Rohingya on the ground inform us that the Arakan Army (AA) has been abducting innocent Rohingya villagers. Frequently, they also loot and rob their properties. While AA leaders may say one thing, the ground reality tells another story. #RohingyaNeedProtection 7) Another round of genocide is underway. Both the Junta and the Arakan Army (AA) are committing serious crimes against the Rohingya. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) should order additional provisional measures. #RohingyaNeedProtection 8. The curfew hours, announced by the Arakan Army (AA), from 7 pm to 6 am, constitute arbitrary detention. If they aim to protect the Rohingya, they should refrain from using Rohingya villages as battlefields. #RohingyaNeedProtection
