Excited to share that a paper I co-authored during my time at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has just been published! Our research dives into the complexities of equitable decarbonization from the national to community-scale perspective. We show that the U.S. top-down approach to an energy equity framework for decarbonization, while necessary for large-scale policymaking, does not identify all disadvantaged communities nor the diversity and complexity of their concerns and is insufficient alone to ensure equitable decarbonization. https://lnkd.in/guY2Bs3Z

The idea that we should focus on long-term effects is central to how I think about communication and how I think ethical 'engagement' goes beyond just communication. I started my social scientist life studying long-term media effects (i.e., cultivation research). There's lots of surprising experiments showing how subtle heuristic cues can take advantage of peoples' inherent cognitive biases often lead people to make quick decisions for good or ill (for a sampling, read Gladwell's Blink or Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow), but science can't succeed long-term on short-term heuristic cues. We need to do the hard, slow work of behaving and communicating in ways that form the types of evaluative beliefs that underlie long-term behavior change and behavioral trust.

🌱 "Concordia Living Lab of Loyola Campus: Decarbonization and operational optimization of a community energy system" We are excited to share more details about one of the recipients of our 36 seed-funded projects.      These projects are geared towards promoting sustainability within built environments, enhancing resilient transportation systems, and fostering citizen engagement.   "Concordia Living Lab of Loyola Campus: Decarbonization and operational optimization of a community energy system" aims to establish a new research lab on Concordia’s Loyola Campus. It is designed to assist communities in reducing their carbon emissions and enhancing their resilience by focusing on the necessary infrastructure changes for transitioning to renewable energy.    Radu Zmeureanu, Professor at Concordia University, is the Principal Investigator (PI) of this research project. Public engagement with science (PES) takes place over time - it is most effective when you plan for and play the long game. In our Practice Brief on the Cumulative element of the SCRREE Framework, we suggest scientists and PES practitioners think about their PES as a way to build long-term relationships with community members.
