Soft skills: (far) Back to the Future Discovering the value of soft skills today is like acting shocked that water is wet—a notion well understood over a century ago. The Carnegie Foundation had it figured out, back in 1918 (that's right, over a century ago), declaring soft skills superior to technical skills and urging engineering schools to focus on developing students' personalities. (check page 106-107 https://lnkd.in/dRM6vskt) Here we are, over a century later: 1) The modern recruitment landscape acknowledges soft skills but paradoxically relies increasingly on AI, robots, and shiny new tech to dissect CVs —a curious ode to human qualities in a digitised world 2) Education makes a half-hearted effort towards integrating soft skills, with real, impactful adoption more exception than rule, especially in the foundational years of schooling. It appears we're marking the rediscovery of ancient knowledge, discussing it loudly yet not fully committing to the necessary transformation. However , there's hope: the potential for technology to promote soft skills in new, impactful ways. Keep an eye on this development. #fairception #softskills #recruitment #authenticity #humans #people #whoyouarematters #futureofwork #beyourself #futureofwork #recruitment #personaldevelopment #talents #diversity #inclusion #hiring #hrtech

Hot take: soft skills are vastly more important than hard skills. This was a super interesting article to read, and I highly recommend it. Probably the most important quote within it: "'In the past, jobs were about muscles. Now they’re about brains, but in the future, they’ll be about the heart.'" In a world that glorifies technical skills, we need to relearn how to teach kids in school (& relearn ourselves) skills like communication, empathy, collaboration, networking, creativity, critical thinking, reflection & problem solving. #personaldevelopment #professionaldevelopment #communcation #softskills #careerdevelopment #careeradvancement

"Instead, it’s critical for us all to start from a place that imagines what’s possible for humans in the age of A.I. When you do that, you find yourself focusing quickly on people skills that allow us to collaborate and innovate in ways technology can amplify but never replace. And you find yourself — whatever the role or career stage you’re in — with agency to better manage this moment of historic change." Key takeaway: "Today the knowledge economy is giving way to a relationship economy, in which people skills and social abilities are going to become even more core to success than ever before." “In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.” ― Eric Hoffer, Reflections on the Human Condition #agency, #communication, #collaboration, #relationshipeconomy, #knowledgeeconomy, #peopleskills Aneesh Raman Maria Flynn Minouche Shafik
