While Scotland’s recent decision to ban trawling in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is a step in the right direction, it’s crucial to acknowledge that MPAs are defined as areas where human activities are regulated to protect marine ecosystems and biodiversity. Given this definition, these areas should have had stringent protections from the start. The need to ban trawling now suggests that initial conservation measures were not adequately enforced. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 - 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 #𝟭𝟱 ⚓ In the early morning hours this week, a 12-meter 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 off the coast of Donegal, Ireland near Inis Meáin Island. While all four crew members were safely rescued, this close call 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗮.
