Building a Sustainable Maritime Future in the Øresund Region Ocean Valley is where innovation meets action in the pursuit of a sustainable maritime future. Situated in the Øresund Region, a unique crossroads between Denmark and Sweden, Ocean Valley brings together industry leaders, innovators, researchers, and policymakers to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time: reducing CO2 emissions and accelerating the green transition in the maritime sector. We believe that collaboration is the key to transformation. By bridging the gap between the blue (maritime) and green (sustainable) industries, Ocean Valley creates a platform where cutting-edge technologies, such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), can thrive. Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to solve local challenges, scale global solutions, and position the Øresund Region as a world leader in sustainable maritime innovation. What do you think is the biggest challenge in achieving a sustainable maritime future?

International shipping alone accounted for nearly 3% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. The transportation sector, including shipping, contributes 20.2% to the world's total CO₂ emissions, making it the second-largest contributor to global carbon pollution. Clearly, we need innovation in this area for the sake of ocean health, the engine of our Earth. At the World Ocean Summit in Lisbon, I had the wonderful opportunity to learn about Veer.Voyage, a revolutionary initiative led by founder and CEO Danielle Southcott. Veer is on a mission to transform the shipping industry with their flagship project, Design Nº1, becoming the first clean container ship to cross an ocean without fossil fuels, utilising DynaRig sails and green hydrogen. What sets Veer apart is its invitation to researchers and the latest technologies to join its vessels. These ships are not just modes of transport but floating laboratories gathering vital data on ocean beds and ecosystems. Danielle's vision of making this information publicly accessible demonstrates a commitment to democratizing ocean research, deepening our understanding, and enhancing the protection of marine environments. The shipping industry must change; we all know that, and it will—it's only a matter of time. Veer.Voyage shows us that it is possible, and the change we seek in this realm is already underway. Let's embrace it. #economist #WorldOceanSummit #Sustainability #GreenShipping #Veer #EnvironmentalInnovation
