Back from London's Rethinking Materials Summit, and 2 days of panels, keynotes and insightful conversations with fellow innovators. What did we take away? 🎤 An insightful panel about Sustainable Feedstocks and Waste Stream Valorization, which our CEO & Co-Founder Anne Lamp was invited to join. Anne's messages on stage: We need a systems change, in which products and business models need to be radically redesignd - using a broad variety of complementary solutions. Utilizing biomass plays an important role in this systems change, but we need to prioritize sustainable use following the cascade principle - for example by using agriculural side streams or other non-food biomass. This will be crucial to avoid trade-offs on biodiversity and forest preservation or food security. The other panelist complemented their perspectives from brand owner, chemical industry, recycling and certifications perspective. Inspiring! 🌏 We used the chance to dive into personal meetings, and network with the globally growing ecosystem, and sensed a new level of collaboration between material producers, brand owners, converters and investors. That is great news, as it needs all of us to drive the change we need to see! Our approach to develop not just a material, but also operate and scale the refinery process from plant leftovers, definitely stood out. Also, we were super proud to be mentioned as one of the companies that could successfully close a big financing round recently, during challenging economic times. Great to see how this seems to inspire many other companies and investors! 📣 Definitely highlights were the conversations with members of the #NaturalPolymersGroup, in which we had the chance to discuss further activities, for example with an eye on the ongoing negotiations of the #UNPlasticsTreaty. Why? Well, even though natural polymer based biomaterials are well known in the innovator's field, the policy landscape still needs to be educated on their potential. technology and innovation: 🏆 Finalist #1: Lyras A/S With Lyras A/S’ UV technology, raslysation, liquid treatment & food producers can save 60-90% of their energy consumption and 60-80% of the water consumption, compared to traditional pasteurization. In several industries one installation has led to annual CO2 savings of more than 850 tons. 🏆 Finalist #2: SproutWorld SproutWorld makes the only plantable pencils in the world. By planting the pencils after use instead of throwing them out, the user can give them a new life by when they grow into herbs, vegetables, flowers, fruits or trees. 🏆 Finalist #3: Tønder Biogas by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Tønder Biogas converts organic waste into biomethane and biogenic CO2. The plant primarily processes agricultural waste, helping mitigate emissions from livestock farming while providing renewable energy equivalent to the gas needs of 30,000 households. It is also one of the first large-scale facilities in Europe to utilize biogenic CO2 as a byproduct.

As we work towards economic sustainability in the U.S. bioeconomy, we must also make the U.S. bioeconomy environmentally sustainable. My colleagues, Megan Damico, Ph.D. & Sarah R. Carter, Ph.D., and I discuss a 2-pronged strategy on how the U.S. government should tackle this question and harness the power of sustainable biotech to achieve some of our major environmental goals!
