#OGSresearch New Open Access paper on Geohazard Features of the Gulf of Taranto, Central Mediterranean Sea The team, including #OGS, Università degli Studi del Sannio-Benevento, Università della Calabria, Università degli Studi di Trieste, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Sapienza Università di Roma, #GeoazurLaboratory, explore the complex seabed morphologies of the Gulf of Taranto in southern Italy including their connection to the geodynamic evolution of the region that began during the Neogene period when the Adria plate started subducting beneath the retreating Calabrian arc. The findings highlight how the unique physiography of the Gulf serves as a natural laboratory for studying coastal and marine geohazards. The paper presents key geohazard features and provide valuable insights into significant triggers and potential hazards that warrant follow-up studies and attentive monitoring — crucial for safeguarding coastal communities and marine infrastructures. Abu Dhabi, UAE, July 1 2024— A team of researchers have uncovered surprising survival tactics by coral reef fish who inhabit the Arabian Gulf, the warmest waters on Earth. Led by Jacob Johansen, Associate Research Professor at Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and John Burt, Co-Principal Investigator at The Mubadala Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ACCESS) at NYU Abu Dhabi, the team discovered adaptations in metabolism and swimming abilities that help fish survive the extreme heat of the Arabian Gulf. Surprisingly, these fish did not follow leading theoretical predictions where the maximum size of fishes is expected to reduce due to limitations in metabolic oxygen-supply. Instead, these fish demonstrated an unexpected capacity to maintain sufficient oxygen to fuel performance, even at elevated temperatures. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gQSQMxqD

Once in space, its hyperspectral camera will target Chilean ecosystems, then expand its observation to the Global South and, eventually, the entire world. 🌎 In its initial stage, Lemu Nge will focus on five observation areas👇🏻 1️⃣ Characterization of Ramsar category Andean wetlands, comprising 16 sites in the country. 2️⃣ Monitoring of underwater macroalgae forests along the Chilean coast. 3️⃣ Classification of changes in land use throughout the national territory. 4️⃣ Identification of key plant species, especially trees. 5️⃣ Recognition of invasive plant species that affect biodiversity. The groundbreaking technology, Coral-AI, combines real-time environmental monitoring with automated delivery of beneficial microorganisms, offering a proactive approach to preserving coral health not just in the Red Sea, but potentially across the world’s oceans. The EuroGO-SHIP Project partners in Bergen this week, kicking off the final project year consolidating nine recent deliverables to devise the core features and requirements of a functioning EuroGO-SHIP Research Infrastructure. The project seeks to enable the European community conducting hydrographic observations at sea to provide higher quality and more sustainable data flows to a broad range of end users, more effectively, strengthening European capabilities to deliver world-class Oceanographic science, which is key to inform policies and to meet the goals of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030” and the wider objectives of the EU Green Deal.
