Almost 4000 households sought homelessness support in Gippsland in 2023-24, and that figure doesn’t include those who did not receive support due to an overdemand for support services. On any given day, at least 35,000 people in NSW are homeless. But homelessness is solvable. And listening to and following the guidance of people with lived experiences of homelessness is critical to finding long-term solutions. StreetCare, the lived experience advisory group we support, is regularly sought out by government, housing providers and frontline agencies for that guidance. Over the past year, StreetCare has protected the rights of people who are homeless or needing housing support and made practical improvements in their lives, including by: - advising the ABS on how to better include people experiencing homelessness in the Census, - working with Homes NSW to highlight barriers to using specialist homelessness services and provide examples of good practice, - participating in the National Housing and Homelessness Plan Roundtable and consultation for the NSW Homelessness Strategy, - advising NSW Telco so people experiencing homelessness have better access to technology, and - informing the Commonwealth inquiry into the COVID-19 response. This Homelessness Week, we celebrate the success of StreetCare and urge decision-makers to remember that the best results are achieved when law and policy is created with people affected, rather than for them. In spring 2023, the federal government awarded 32 communities across the country with additional resources to address unsheltered homelessness. Some of the challenges faced by these communities that they strive to tackle with these additional resources include a severe lack of affordable housing or housing assistance programs to meet the need, homelessness response systems being stretched thin, people who are unsheltered needing clear pathways to access homeless services, and policy and politics getting in the way of solutions that work. A major social change required to address something that is unacceptable in such a modern and rich country as Australia. When we consider the devastating impact that homelessness causes in terms of both physical and mental health, all options must be considered and then acted upon. This is where we, as a society, fall down. Much consideration, huge amount of talking, but action and commitment does not follow. At Upstream Australia we are using strong evidenced-based support programs in an attempt to widen the solutions options, recognising that there is no single approach to overcoming the problems. I encourage all levels of government, philanthropists, and companies to apply their skills and their funding capabilities to help address the homelessness problems plaguing our nation and preventing an entire generation of fulfilling their full potential.

At last, the government is providing funding for Local Authorities to tackle not only at crisis point but through prevention approaches. With almost £1bn going into homelessness in 2025-26, including a 30% increase in the homelessness prevention grant (and a cap on how much of it can be spent on Temporary Accommodation), the sector can seek to tackle change. We have long argued that digital tooling is the only way to address the challenges that this country is facing at the scale that is required. This needs to happen in tandem with other changes across the industry that are being supported by this increase in funding. Now, it's down to councils to deploy this in a smart way that builds learning on how to impact homelessness. #MHCLG #Homelessness
