Manuel Häußler wants to turn the way we produce and even think about plastics upside down. In his vision of a #CircularEconomy, chemistry produces high-performance #plastics (comparable to what we're used to) but ➡️From waste and by-products instead of fossil fuels ➡️ using much less energy, thanks to natural processes like yeast and algae fermentation ➡️That can be completely recycled at the end of its life ➡️ restarting the cycle For his project, Manuel received the German Studienpreis 2022 by the Körber-Stiftung and funding by SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen. I had the opportunity to talk at the #Packaging & #Sustainability Summit of Lebensmittel Zeitung in Frankfurt about the impact of the new Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the implementation of its requirements at Henkel Consumer Brands. Henkel fully endorses the #PPWR because it will enable a level playing field for all participants along the packaging value chain in Europe. The objectives of the PPWR are super inline with Henkel’s packaging targets for 2025 (for example to use more than 30% recycled plastics). Thus, we are already well on track in the transformation of our packaging portfolio towards a #circulareconomy. For sure, there are same challenges in the PPWR ahead, especially when it comes to integrate PCR in flexible packs and closures. In anticipation of EU-wide standards of #Design4recycling and #recyclability assessment, you may get lost among existing different assessment guidelines e.g. Recyclass, Recoup, and others. BKV GmbH and Institut cyclos-HTP GmbH have published a comparative study of 9 existing assessment standards.
