🌱 **Great therapists are born, not made!** 🌱 Some of us have been *unofficial* therapists since childhood—like me, the last born, expertly navigating sibling drama and resolving conflicts between friends in boarding school, all while collecting zero paychecks. 😂👶 Turns out, those years of peace-making and conflict resolution were just early career training! As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I now apply those natural gifts to help my clients heal—mind, body, and spirit. Psychiatry isn't just about treating symptoms; it's about truly *connecting* with the whole person and guiding them toward balance. A great therapist? They’re empathetic, great listeners, problem-solvers, and they don’t just work on the surface—they dig deep, finding holistic ways to help clients thrive. To all my fellow *born* therapists out there—keep doing what you do best. 🌟 #MentalHealthMatters #HolisticHealing #BornToBeATherapist #EmpathyInAction

“Communication is the bridge between confusion and clarity.” Today, I have the privilege of teaching psychiatry communication skills to medical students—a vital part of their journey to becoming empathetic and effective clinicians. It’s incredible to see the next generation of professionals learning how to truly connect, understand, and support their patients. Being part of the training team at NELFT NHS Foundation Trust reminds me of the power of teamwork, mentorship, and the shared goal of improving mental health care. Strong communication is more than a skill—it’s a tool that saves lives, builds trust, and creates hope. To anyone learning, teaching, or simply striving to communicate better: keep going. The impact you make may be invisible at first, but it’s always there, shaping lives in ways you can’t imagine. #MentalHealthMatters #CommunicationSkills #FutureDoctors #EmpathyInAction #HappyToHealthYou Happytohealthyou.com

On #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, we’re reminded of how vital proactive, accessible support is for new and expecting parents. With about 20% of maternal deaths caused by suicide, providing preventative care has never been more critical. At our company retreat this year, we decided we needed to step up and provide more support to our high-risk moms, knowing that the current options were not serving them well. Next month, we are launching 1:1 care management and triage, providing availability for elevated-risk patients to talk with a licensed clinical social worker within 48 hours of onboarding with Canopie. We know that compassionate, individualized care makes a huge difference—research by JAMA Psychiatry shows that personalized outreach can reduce suicide risk by 30%. We’re committed to doing our part. If you or someone you know is in need of help or a lifeline, call or text 988 for support. There is no better crisis intervention. #MaternalSuicideAwareness #SuicidePreventionMonth

"Cynthia, you're too talented to want to specialize in psychiatric nursing." "Why?" If I may ask. "These people are mad and you'd end up behaving like them if care is not taken!" ___ ❌ Myth: People with mental illness are "mad." 💊 Reality: Mental health conditions are complex and treatable. ___ So, what excites me about psychiatry? 1. It allows me to help individuals through some of life's most difficult moments. 2. The brain is fascinating and understanding its intricate workings is a lifelong pursuit for me. 3. The mind and body are interconnected, and I find the nervous system's role in mental health captivating. 4. This field offers me continuous learning and professional development opportunities in my career. In conclusion: Psychiatric nursing allows me to make a real difference in people's lives. It's challenging, rewarding, and a perfect fit for my skills. I am Cynthia Ukah ☀️, a registered Nurse-Midwife and an academic writer. Your mental well-being is why I write every day. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions regarding your mental health. #MentalHealthMatters #PsychiatricNursing #BrainHealth

I had my first proper psychiatric consultation when I was in my fifth year of medical college. I had to take extensive bed rest for my PLID (Low back pain) and that took a toll on my mental health. I am kind of proud of myself that I recognized the necessity of a consultation even at that time when I practically had no idea about the importance of sustaining one's mental health. Although, I work in this field now and I love working in this sector every day, I am also beginning to realize how it can adversely affect one's psychological wellbeing. Many youngsters reach out to me and ask me about how the life of a young doctor pursuing psychiatry is. I mostly don't try to sugarcoat the whole scenario and try to give them a real picture. There are definitely successful psychiatrists who earn quite a lot, who are quite popular and if we just focus on them, the world might seem rosy. But, in reality, the picture is different. Like any other medical specialty, here there are some demerits. Just having an intention to help others is not enough, deep conviction about this journey and ultimate goal should always be kept in mind. Obviously, this specialty will not be as physically grueling as a surgical one, but there will be days where you will be questioning why you have chosen to come here. Sometimes you will feel that the scientific advancement is not progressive enough to cater to the needs of your patients and definitely your health system infrastructure is not designed well (almost every day). Sometimes you might feel used by the commercial entities who are extorting money from patients and attendants. There will be situations which no medical education has prepared you for. Many a times your patients will not be in a state to acknowledge your help especially if you work only in an in-patient setting. Sometimes, you will be subject to ill-informed comments from your fellow colleagues working in other specialties. For these days, you need to practice self-care. You need to remind yourself to enjoy the journey and not only to wait for the destination. The destination is glorious, but the journey is also important because you are devoting the most precious days of your youth in this journey.
