Members of our St. Paul Pavement and Geotechnical Engineering and our Construction Services teams toured a couple of Minnesota's paving and materials plants to better understand bituminous plant production late last month. We extend our thanks to MP&M for hosting us and all our team members who attended the event. We look forward to our employee-owners using this knowledge and contributing it to our mission of working together to build a more certain world. #Engineering #TeamAET

As part of the Cooling Prize competition, finalists are asked to prepare a short paper on their topic. I am very excited to say that my paper has now been published in December’s Ground Engineering Magazine - which can be found at the link below. 😀 The paper elaborates on two miniature pile installation tests in chalk. Tests were performed within University of Dundee SMART Lab X-ray CT scanner, made possible via a new multi axis loading frame developed during my PhD. Whilst the tests were conducted at the small-scale, they, along with X-ray CT, have offered valuable quantitative insight into pile installation mechanisms and various other rock-structure interaction problems. This data may be particularly valuable to numerical modellers. As part of Matteo Oryem Ciantia’s #ICEPICK project, Marco Previtali ⭐️ has been using the observations to help validate a numerical framework suited to modelling full-scale pile installation and loading problems in soft rock. It has been a delight working with Nia Kajastie and others at Ground Engineering Magazine throughout the publishing process and of course everyone at the British Geotechnical Association! 🟢 Additional thanks to the University of Dundee geo team and my co-author and advisor Matteo Oryem Ciantia ⭐️ in preparing the paper. #ICEPICK #chalk #small-scale #X-ray
NEW ISSUE The December issue of Ground Engineering Magazine includes site reports on ground improvement works on the #TranspennineRouteUpgradeWestscheme, grouting solutions at #HamptonReservoir in southwest London, and shaft construction challenges at the HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd #GreenParkWay site. The issue also includes the publication of the paper that won the 2024 British Geotechnical Association #CoolingPrize. In addition, it has interviews with the chair of the The Federation of Piling Specialists, Malcolm O'Sullivan, and the chair of the Steel Piling Group, David Coyle. The December issue also has an Engineering Insight Q&A with the 2024 winner of the #GEAwards #EqualityDiversityandInclusion Champion award, Hollie Taylor, as well as the latest news and opinion. Pile foundations play a crucial role in transferring loads from structures to deeper soil layers or rock, ensuring stability and safety. They are essential in various scenarios such as weak soil, high loads, deep settlements, environmental concerns, and poor soil conditions. Different types of pile foundations like Driven piles, Drilled shafts, Caissons, Helical piles, and Micropiles cater to specific construction needs, offering solutions for diverse challenges. The advantages of pile foundations are significant, including increased load-carrying capacity, reduced settlement, improved stability, enhanced structural integrity, and a minimized risk of foundation failure. Understanding the importance and benefits of pile foundations can make a substantial difference in the successful completion of construction projects. #Construction #Engineering #Foundations #Infrastructure #BuildingProjects #pilefoundation

The Interstate Bridge Replacement Program released new visualizations of the proposed I-5 crossing this week, providing a better sense of how the proposed $6 billion replacement bridge would look and feel, particularly for people standing on it or nearby. The project team has published renders before, but they focused on the center of the river to compare different bridge configuration options. The new images released this week get up close, and they show the new bridge would loom large over Hayden Island and the Vancouver waterfront. Tutor Perini Building Corp. has announced that its subsidiary, Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. has been awarded a contract valued at approximately $1.1 billion by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection for the Kensico-Eastview Connection Tunnel Project. The scope of work entails the construction of a new deep rock tunnel between the Kensico Reservoir and the Catskill/Delaware Ultraviolet (CDUV) Light Disinfection Facility, both in Westchester County, New York. Work is expected to begin in the coming months with substantial completion expected in 2030. The contract value was added to Tutor Perini’s backlog in Q3 2024. Read the article on Underground Infrastructure Magazine at https://lnkd.in/gnFQWx2p. This Lecture 44 in series of my YouTube Channel “Geotechnical Engineering Consultancy Tips” is the first one about Roads after covering a few on Buildings, Over Head Tanks, Bridges, Micro-wave Towers, Transmission Line Towers, etc. and even Airfield Pavements including a few others on varied topics such as Liquefaction, Pile Load Tests & a few case studies. It describes about the Embankment Construction Specifications for Roads, Highways, Subgrades, Earthen Shoulders and miscellaneous Backfills as per Section 305 of MoRTH Specifications for Road and Bridge Works covering the Physical requirements and Density requirements of the embankment and subgrade materials of different heights excluding that of cinder and flyash material which is usually not allowed in to be used as the constituent material for building embankments/subgrades to carry the Road Loads #geotechnicalengineeringconsultancytips #anuragkapoor #embankmentconstruction #MoRTH #subgradespecification#embankmentconstructioninroads #highways #subgrades #transportation #embankments #civilengineering #pavements #geotechnical #geotechnicalengineer #soil #geotech #materialengineering https://lnkd.in/dr-mhZDQ
