Celebrating a historic milestone in inclusion! 🎓 Ana Victoria Espino De Santiago just made history as the world’s first lawyer with Down Syndrome, graduating from her University in Mexico. Ana's journey highlights the power of supportive education, especially with the support of her 'shadow teacher.' Her goal? To become a legislator and advocate for the disability community. A powerful reminder that with the right support, there are no limits to what can be achieved! 🌟💜 #Inclusion #NDIS #OnSideNDIS #DisabilityAdvocacy #BreakingBarriers

Why am I seeing so many posts about disability community orgs across Australia who are about to enter the new financial year with their funding slashed? We're talking cuts of over 50%! Not only are many of their employees about to be out of a job, but the crucial services and programs they deliver to disabled people are about to be deeply wounded, or dead. That's a rhetorical 'Why', of course, but it doesn't bode well for NDIS participants; it doesn't bode well for those of us unable to access the NDIS; and it doesn't bode well for our still mysterious Foundational Supports, either. #ndis #DisabilityRights #DisabilityInclusion #FoundationalSupports #DisabilityRightsareHumanRights

Washington Group Questions give detailed information on PWDs involvement rather than the conventional and dichotomous way of asking "Are you disabled?" Excited to announce that I have completed the 'Introduction to Washington Group Questions' online course by VSO through Humanitarian Leadership Academy. Aggregated data can mask inequalities, but the WGQ tool offers a more nuanced understanding of disability by providing detailed information on prevalence rates and domains of difficulty in daily life. This data is crucial for informed decision-making and resource allocation. #Disability #Washingtongroupquestions

Being diagnosed with a learning disability does not mean a person is not intelligent. It means they need extra support and specialised care to overcome the challenges they face in a particular subject area and learn in their unique way. Learning Disability Week is a time to uplift those within the community and support them in overcoming the barriers they face. [Image description: The image says: "Do you see me?” Underneath is says: From Monday 17 - Sunday 23 June 2024, we’re recognising Learning Disability Week. Section 504 forbids organizations and employers from excluding or denying individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to receive program benefits and services. It defines the rights of individuals with disabilities to participate in, and have access to, program benefits and services. You are your best advocate. It's not easy, especially if you are fighting for Disability Inclusion. It can beat you down, and make you feel like giving up. But you have probably done this your whole life, who better to spread much needed education. Why not YOU? YOU have the lived experience. Advocating for yourself is creating history and is advocating for others. BE THE CHANGE!!!! #ADHD #DIVERSITY #DEI #INCLUSION #BeTheChange #advocacy #disability #equity #autism #AUDHD

I may be an NDIS participant, but I still get a little lost around what is happening with the changes to the NDIS. Thank you Summer Foundation Ltd and Dr George Taleporos (GAICD, PhD) for their podcast, which draws in experts to help explain and explore the issues. #NDIS #Disability #Community #Podcast
On the NEW episode of Reasonable & Necessary, Dr George Taleporos (GAICD, PhD) meets with disability rights advocate El Gibbs and disability law expert Mitchell Skipsey to discuss the NDIS Bill, the recent amendments and what is needed to ensure that the NDIS Bill meets the needs of NDIS participants. The guests highlight the importance of constraints on the NDIA's information gathering powers and the need for strengthening avenues for appeals. They also highlight the importance of considering the whole person in determining support packages. They explain what happens next and express hope that the Senate committee will recommend further amendments to address the concerns of the disability community. Check it out now on YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud and Apple Podcasts.
