Last week's Hospital in the Home Society of Australasia conference was full of fascinating insights, including from Michael Holland and David Nicolás Ocejo (see image below). Dr Holland highlighted the crucial role HITH services can play in helping reduce the burden on public hospital emergency departments (hence the government's recently announced $31.4 million investment in HITH: https://lnkd.in/gzhiYJ3J). Keynote speaker Dr Ocejo talked about the successful impact HITH has had on the Spanish healthcare system since it began in 1989. Spain now has 126 HITH units taking a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare at home that is paying dividends. Integrated, multidisciplinary care is a hallmark of Vitalis' Hospital in the Home service. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gcg9NZwR

What is happening in Queensland? While NSW and Vic have been reasonably static, Queensland is an outlier with a large increase in Emergency Department presentations of about 28% during the 5 years to 2021. However there is a recent 10% reduction in ED presentations from 2022 to 2023. Changes in ED presentations are often attributed to how primary care is performing. Does this apply to the QLD numbers? https://lnkd.in/gHbzKMf3 Michael Clements; Dr Nicole Higgins MBBS FRACGP GAICD; Maria Boulton; Marita Cowie AM; Francois Pretorius; Andrew Cohen; Ged Foley; John Hall; Tracey Johnson; Bruce Willett; Edwin Kruys; Shannon Fentiman

As healthcare costs continue to rise at an unprecedented rate and patient needs evolve, it’s critical that we embrace the role of day and short-stay hospitals in providing high-quality, efficient care. Ensuring a level playing field between payors and operators, as well as among operators of all sizes, is essential for funding to keep pace with the true cost of healthcare delivery. Increased funding and transparency are necessary to maintain patient access to vital services and ensure the sustainability of Australia’s healthcare system.
In today’s Media Release, Nexus Hospitals has urged the Federal Government to ensure the private hospital sector is properly funded for the work it performs. Read the full release here: https://lnkd.in/g7rQt3k2

Reflecting on Lessons Learned
3moSeriously? The OHA brainiacs think that because Ontario has the “lowest per capita expenditure for Hospitals” in all of Canada, it is because Ontario hospital CEOs are significantly smarter (and better looking) than those non-Ontario CEO Neanderthals.🤮 It hasn’t occurred to these brainiacs that the lowest per capita cost is related to a science called MATH. Here is how it works: because Ontario has more people (population size) than say PEI, our cost per person / taxpayer is therefore lower than their province. The OHA, as the hospital industry’s lobbyist, is attempting to put the best spin on their request for “more money” for hospitals so we can catch up to the much higher per capita spending of PEI. The lobbyists at the OHA credit the lower cost per citizen as a result of our MORE EFFICIENT MANAGERS. Much like JD Vance speaks to an audience of one — Donald Trump — likewise, the OHA is talking to their hospital CEO members, and their Community Governing Boards. So, show of hands: who thinks the OHA has convinced us all that our lower per capita hospital cost are due to excellence in management 🤷♂️?
