Although the international community has made great strides in addressing GBV through programs over the past decades, programs must more effectively center the voices of survivors and the local community. This article from SaraJane (SJ) Renfroe and Shelby Roberts proposes actionable steps forward in preventing and reducing/eliminating GBV by reflecting on the global context and past interventions, and examining the current state of affairs. https://lnkd.in/gx_saAZM #16Days #EndGBV

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 | 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐀𝐂𝐄 • 𝐇𝐨𝐧.Peter Malinauskas, 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 | 𝐇𝐨𝐧.𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐣𝐚 𝐀𝐎—South Australia's Bold Stand Against Violence: Premier Malinauskas Propels Royal Commission to Address Domestic Violence In Australia, a trailblazing nation that has issued strict declarations regarding violence, all forms of abuse, ranging from physical and psychological to mental and emotional, are viewed as acts of violence that demand immediate cessation through an unwavering and comprehensive 360° resolution. South Australia stands at the forefront of this battle against violence, with the Hon. Peter Malinauskas, Premier of the state, leading the charge. The initiation of South Australia's Royal Commission into Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence signals a pivotal moment in the fight against these pervasive societal issues. The Royal Commission, which kicked off with a focus on amplifying the voices of survivors and professionals within the domestic violence landscape, underscores the imperative to address these forms of abuse that transcend geographical, religious, gender, socioeconomic, age, and cultural boundaries. Premier Malinauskas's staunch stance emphasizes that domestic, family, and sexual violence are intolerable scourges that society must confront collectively. Anticipation surrounds the Royal Commission's outcomes, with expectations high for the development of a robust framework that will guide the state's interventions, preventative measures, and responsive strategies to combat these insidious forms of violence effectively. The appointment of esteemed South Australian figure Natasha Stott Despoja AO to spearhead this critical undertaking signifies a commitment to enacting change and fostering a more empathetic and responsive approach to addressing violence within the community. This comprehensive approach encapsulates a 360° resolution strategy that encompasses prevention, protection, prosecution, and rehabilitation. Premier Malinauskas calls upon all individuals with insights, experiences, or solutions to step forward and contribute to this pivotal dialogue, emphasizing the collective responsibility required to create a society free from violence. As the Royal Commission progresses, it is poised to set a new standard for how South Australia, and potentially the world, responds to domestic, family, and sexual violence. This initiative represents a significant step towards building a safer and more supportive society for all individuals, transcending borders and cultures in its quest to eradicate violence in all its forms. #Australia #SouthAustralia #Violence
South Australia’s Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence begins today with a focus on hearing from survivors and those who work in the domestic, family and sexual violence systems. Domestic, family and sexual violence can happen to anyone — regardless of country, religion, sexuality, gender, social background socio-economic status, age or culture. It is a scourge – and we cannot tolerate it as a society. We anticipate this Royal Commission will set out a framework for how our State can best intervene and prevent domestic, family and sexual violence, and how best to respond when it occurs. We are very fortunate to have such an eminent South Australian in Natasha Stott Despoja AO to undertake this work. I encourage everyone who has a contribution to make to do so. Quality reading. Whilst my observations are based on posts on this platform and the current algorithm-driven mainstream/social media coverage, it seems the emphasis in outrage/advocacy and political opportunism is on the *gendered* aspect of the violence problem, rather than the endemic 'red mist' societal *violence* problem, and its inextricable link to poverty, lack of opportunity, substance addiction, gambling addiction, abhorrent online conduct and societal cohort vulnerability etc. Whilst the available evidence undoubtedly enables the portrayal of violence as gendered, there's insufficient evidence (and accompanying discussion/research funding) addressing the reality that poverty, addiction, desperation and an inability to regulate visceral latent anger are issues that transcend gender. They are real-time, stress-generating conditions among low-income and marginalised *humanity* requiring meaningful intervention and support *across the board*.

I have a piece in the guardian today, calling on the intersections of gendered base violence and state based harms that disproportionately impacts Aboriginal families and communities. Aboriginal women and families continue to be subject to the most horrific forms of violence. And when reaching out for support and safety, they risk having their children removed by the state and criminalisation. Justice & accountability must include First Nations justice & accountability. These intersections must be addressed, and today with the national cabinet meeting, there must be strategic outcomes and actions that address this. https://lnkd.in/gJEtcnbr

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) has compiled a toolkit to raise awareness about Youth Justice Action Month. The theme "Justice Is ____" aims to create a new vision of justice, equity, and opportunity for youth affected by the justice system.
