The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) has compiled a toolkit to raise awareness about Youth Justice Action Month. The theme "Justice Is ____" aims to create a new vision of justice, equity, and opportunity for youth affected by the justice system. It invites us to center the voices of impacted youth, families, and allies as we reimagine new possibilities for systems of support, healing, and restorative justice. https://lnkd.in/g9fTZqBa #YJAM2024 | #YJAM | #JusticeIs | #YouthJustice | #OJJDP | #JuvenileJustice

As we observe National Child Protection Week, we are deeply concerned about the current state of #ChildProtection and #YouthJustice in Australia. Recent tragic events, including the death of a teenager in a WA youth detention centre, plans to lower the age of criminal responsibility in the NT and the abhorrent mistreatment of children in Queensland watch houses, highlight the urgent need for comprehensive and evidence-based reform. We stand with the Australian Human Rights Commission in calling for immediate action to address systemic issues in our justice system and uphold our international obligations to protect the rights and wellbeing of every child in Australia. Decades of evidence point to raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14 years – children should be nurtured and guided, not criminalised – and investing in community-based preventative and diversionary programs as alternatives to detention. The time for change is now. We must work together to create a fair and just system that prioritises and safeguards the wellbeing and future of our young people. At a time when our public service is being slashed and burned we still have courageous officials willing to speak up when they believe ministers have got it wrong. This is called integrity and a refusal to collude with politically motivated policy. This is especially significant at a time when their is no employment safety in the public service. Thank you to those of you willing to make such stands. Your integrity and courage is amazing! It is a worrying precedent to have a minister disregard expert opinion and evidence based research and chose to rely on the opinions of individuals with questionable agendas and motivations. This approach has no place in a first world country which used to be a world leader in youth justice legislation, policy and practices. The promise of a fit for purpose facility and highly specialist staff needed to work with the highly complex needs of young people is not true. The truth is one of our struggling youth justice residences will accommodate the boot camp and current attendants will staff it. A ‘let’s just give it a go and see what happens’ approach is unacceptable and dangerous for all involved. No other sector would tolerate this Gung-Ho madness. This is a shameful abuse of political power.

A restorative process therefore aims to amplify victims’ voices to help offenders understand the impact of their behaviours, and by doing so, helps to address the causes of those behaviours. Where applicable, restorative justice engages communities (be they geographic, familial, or epistemic) in supporting victims and reintegrating offenders whilst aiming to reduce the likelihood of such events taking place in the future by addressing community issues that might lead to conflict
