👍 Approvals have been granted to five major undersea energy links by Ofgem, including the LionLink project which is set to connect Dutch offshore windfarms to the GB grid with an onshore landing point in Suffolk - another key puzzle piece in the UK's pursuit of clean power by 2030. 🔋 As Opergy Net Zero Managing Director, Andy Holyland said last week, "Clean power 2030 is achievable" but dependent on "our choices" and, quoting George S. Patton, "A good plan violently (decisively) executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week". 🔗 Learn more about the plans (as well as some of the other big stories of the last week) by visiting our website - link in comments. #offshorewind #interconnection #lionlinkproject #offshoreenergy #suffolk

I mentioned before that I will be sharing more posts about the destruction of pristine countryside here in Suffolk for the sake of "green" energy. This diagram shows part of the plans. From here you can see the extent of the industrialisation - but what is not obvious is that a number of this shaded areas are actually huge concrete industrial buildings. Also to note - this is rural countryside without the road infrastructure to support this level of industrialisation. There are alternative options using brown field sites and offshore - but they will cost more and National Grid is a private company so is naturally concerned about profits, rather than saving what little precious countryside is left in the UK. This year has been the worst on record for many insects and wildlife in the UK, including butterflies. I have seen this first hand in my little garden - I had 1 bee and 10 butterflies where previously my garden was full of insects. We should be doing all we can to save what is left of nature and digging it up is a terrible option. Once it's gone and built on it's gone for ever. Please join me in raising your concerns, raising awareness and support the drive to build on brown field sites and save the British countryside and nature.
⚠️⚠️NAUTILUS INTERCONNECTOR ⚠️⚠️ The recently published proposals by National Grid Ventures (NGV) concerning Nautilus Interconnector (to connect up to 1.4 GW of offshore wind in the UK to Belgium) combined with the planning applications for ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) East Anglia One North (EA1N) and East Anglia Two (EA2) offshore wind projects reveal the hard evidence that Suffolk Coast and Heaths is in grave danger of mass industrialisation. The onshore devastation can be seen all too clearly on the map which shows kilometres of additional cable corridors gouging through our protected landscapes and a further converter station looming 24 metres high and concreting over an additional 12 acres of greenbelt land. This could impact on additional communities including Theberton, Kelsale, Leiston, Sternfield, Snape and Saxmundham. (To be clear, SEAS are not in favour of any of the onshore routing and converter siting options that have been presented by NGV. If NGV is truly committed to protecting rural coastal communities then they must bring forward a grid connection on a brownfield site.) 📢 1 day to SEANERGY BY BLUESIGN's #Seanergy2024, and we are excited to announce our recent contribution to France's national initiatives for #FloatingOffshoreWind, with our #Ports and Harbours consultancy supporting the development of regional port infrastructure along the French Med coastline. 🌊 #ABLFrance recently worked on the Port-la-Nouvelle project, to identify wet storage solutions for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT). The project was split into two phases 👇🏽 ➡ Definition and SWOT comparison of solutions for each zone at port ➡ Details analysis of each solution This project required ABL's combined #maritime expertise with our track-record across +50 #FloatingOffshoreWind projects, to provide a comprehensive analysis of the most feasible solutions for future FOWT at the port. See our project profile in full for more details 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/edW3ntCU 🔗 Or follow the link to book a meeting with our delegation at this week's #Seanergy2024, to meet on stand D17 and discuss in more detail our #MarineAdvisory service offering to support floating wind from concept development through to construction and future operations 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/ePPtHPS7 #EnergyandOceans #EnergyTransition #WindPower #WindEnergy

🏋️Heavyweight engineering solutions are building US offshore wind. Moving six new transition pieces (TP) from Denmark to the US East Coast requires extensive planning and expert execution. Each of these six TPs: - Weighs 540-570 tonnes (around 90 elephants) - Is 30 metres tall (the length of a basketball court) - Is 8 metres wide (comparable in length to a classic London bus) The scale of this project is further proof of the country's commitment to offshore wind development, which continues at pace despite recent speculation. https://lnkd.in/eWZMnkYd #USoffshorewind #offshoreengineering #Virginia #transitionpiece #offshorewind

Offshore wind is a true UK success story – facilitating our #GreenEnergy transition, improving energy security, and powering our economy. Our upcoming leasing round for floating offshore windfarms in the #CelticSea marks a new era for the sector and creates new opportunities onshore. We need new supply chain expertise and infrastructure such as ports and vessels to handle these giant turbines, and cables to moor them and transport the electricity back to shore. The projected benefits to the nation are significant – boosting our economy by £1.4bn and creating 5,300 jobs from the construction of the first three windfarms alone. To make the most of the industrial opportunity, action is needed now. Building on research published today, we’re working with industry, governments, trade bodies and communities to create an action plan to ensure the success not just of the Celtic Sea, but of #FloatingWind, and, as part of the wider UK industrial growth opportunity, help to build on our world-leading position in #OffshoreWind. Really great to read this work by the Crown Estate in the U.K. assessing the potential for floating wind farms in the Celtic Sea and the economic opportunities this presents for ports and the inland economy. Arup has worked extensively along the east coast of the U.K. helping to shape the economic transformation of towns and cities such as Teeside, Grimsby and Hull that have benefited by being part of the offshore wind economy. The opportunity for the economic transformation of ports in the South West, South and North Wales from this investment are significant. #renewableenergy #regeneration #economicdevelopment

Optimising the way in which the North Sea's offshore grid is laid out and built can lead to enormous savings. Complicating the challenge is the fact that the decisions we make today can limit our options in the future ⤵ #offshorewind #offshoregrid

Delighted to see this research published today. The Celtic Sea Blueprint, prepared by Lumen Energy & Environment establishes an evidence base that should act as a call to action for supply chain development and collaboration across the #offshorewind sector. We look forward to working with all stakeholders to capture these opportunities and build on the UK's leading position in #floatingoffshorewind

The contract, of an unprecedented scale for RTE, marks an acceleration in the development of offshore farms and positions France among the few European nations building large offshore high voltage direct current converter stations. The new generation of #offshore wind farms is more powerful and located further away from the coast, taking advantage of stronger and more favourable winds. In order to connect these offshore farms to the onshore electricity grid, it is necessary to use direct current. Behind the jobs/economic value headline opportunities, there are several (high) deployment risks around: 🔴 Ports 🔴 Supply chains 🔴 Vessels Covering both local (controllable) & global (uncontrollable) pinch-points. 🥃 1/2-full or 1/2-empty? And might hydrogen production from offshore wind reduce some risks? Cu Plan B
