Last week, we launched our first pilot workshop on Impact Measurement and Management with our fantastic partner STEM IS FEM. STEM IS FEM is the first STEM ecosystem in Ukraine that brings together organizations, individuals, and ideas to promote education and careers in science. As someone who ran a purpose-driven business for 14 years, I understand on a personal level how challenging it is to embrace something new when working with limited resources. That is why our goal, is to get people excited about impact measurement and provide simple tools and strategies to get things off the ground. And it should be fun! This is especially important in a sector where people are already stretched thin and, in Ukraine's case, often working under rockets with limited electricity. With participation from over 30 countries, SynBio Africa has just wrapped up its third annual event, marking significant progress in advancing S&T across the continent. 🌍 Started four years ago by Ugandan businessman and researcher Geoffrey Otim, Office of Naval Research Global (ONR Global) is a founding partner of the multi-agency sponsored initiative to expand synthetic biology across the continent. Synthetic biology is a branch of science that merges biology with engineering principles to create or modify biological entities with specific, useful characteristics. By assembling biological parts like DNA sequences or entire systems, scientists can engineer organisms to perform new tasks, such as producing medicines or generating renewable energy sources. At this year’s conference, ONR Global Science Directors Dr. Scott Walper and Dr. Martina Siwek (Regional Chief Scientist for Europe, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East) connected with academics, industry leaders and policymakers, offering strategic direction and sharing innovative ideas. MXenes have become an important material group in energy storage and novel applications. However, problems arise during scaling up and commercialization! The bottleneck in the scalability process is the etching of MAX phase into MXenes.Therefore, we embarked on a journey to understand the etching mechanism and reaction kinetics by DFT analysis, followed by experimentally synthesizing the MXenes. I'll be presenting the findings and share a new perspective on MXene scalability at the upcoming I2DM international conference at Abu Dhabi, UAE.
