🌟 Feeling immense gratitude to teach the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health General Preventive Medicine Residents (GPMR) as a course director for their community health curriculum! 🌟 It's a privilege to share my passion for integrative, precision, and functional medicine with resident physicians across various specialties, including general surgery, internal medicine, OB/GYN, and gastroenterology. 🩺✨ Integrative medicine plays a crucial role in enhancing primary and specialty care as well as public health. According to recent studies, despite advances in modern medicine, contemporary society faces epidemics of noncommunicable and infectious diseases, often related to behavior and lifestyle. Integrating conventional medicine with traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine (TCAM) can be beneficial for preventing and treating these diseases. 🌿🧘♂️ The World Health Organization has been developing standards for TCAM, highlighting its growing importance. Nearly 50% of the population in developed nations and even higher percentages in developing countries use some form of TCAM. The trends driving this integration include rising chronic diseases, high healthcare costs, and public interest in complementary approaches. 🌍📈 A recent article emphasizes the need for integrative medicine, focusing on the scientific evidence supporting these approaches. The study highlights various TCIM modalities, such as Ayurveda, Yoga, and traditional Chinese medicine, showing significant benefits for managing chronic and communicable diseases (Seetharaman, Krishnan, & Schneider, 2021). 📊📚 🌿 Let's continue to advance comprehensive care for our patients and communities! 🌿 #IntegrativeMedicine #PrecisionMedicine #FunctionalMedicine #PublicHealth #ResidentPhysicians #MedicalEducation #JohnsHopkins #CommunityHealth #HealthcareInnovation #Gratitude #MedicalTeaching --- Reference: Seetharaman, M., Krishnan, G., & Schneider, R. A groundbreaking systematic review spanning two decades (2000–2020) has explored the role of spirituality in serious medical illness, end-of-life, and palliative care. This rigorous analysis, rooted in the definition of spirituality developed at a global consensus conference hosted by GWish, offers significant insights. Key Findings: Positive Outcomes: Addressing spirituality in the care of seriously ill patients can lead to positive outcomes, enhancing a person-centered, value-sensitive program of care. Broad Applications: Incorporating spirituality is beneficial not only for serious illnesses but also for overall health. The study utilized data evaluated by a diverse 27-member expert panel in spirituality, healthcare, public health, and medicine. This panel's insights underscore the importance of integrating spiritual considerations into patient care. This study is the most rigorous and comprehensive systematic analysis of modern-day literature on health and spirituality to date according to Tracy Balboni, lead author and senior physician at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center and professor of radiation oncology at Harvard Medical School. It highlights the profound impact that spiritual care can have on patient outcomes and emphasizes the need for holistic approaches in medical practice. #Healthcare #Spirituality #PatientCare #PalliativeCare #PublicHealth #HolisticHealth #ResearchInsights #PatientCenteredCare https://lnkd.in/g99jcPDT

Excited to share our latest publication in Life MDPI (MDPI) with my mentor and co-author(s), Dr. Hend Alqaderi and Dr. Zahra Chinipardaz. Our study explores the association between severe periodontitis and cognitive decline in older adults. We found that lower cognitive performance is associated with a higher likelihood of severe periodontitis, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), a marker of systemic inflammation, plays a significant role as an effect modifier in this relationship. This work highlights the critical interplay between oral health and systemic conditions like cognitive function. Feels great to contribute to this important area of research. WHAT‘s NEXT @ THE HEALTH CAPTAINS ? HEALTH = Doctors Island KOS CAPTAINS = Captains Islands Föhr, Amrum, Sylt THE HEALTH CAPTAINS Islandchapter KOS - The Global Hippocratic Health Captains Oath Brainpool - started yesterday when this year Nobel Laureates in Medicine where announced to create a global Brainpool to update the Hippocratic Oath for Health Captains together: “The Future of Medicine needs access towards it’s historic Hippocratic Fundaments” Hippocrates of KOS is the “Father of Medicine” and the Hallmarks of Aging are the “Mother of all Diseases” HIPPOCRATIC OATH The Hippocratic Oath is traditionally administered to the young physician upon entering the profession. Although usually attributed to Hippocrates, it is probably an ancient Roman oath. Hippocrates, the Greek physician called the Father of Medicine, lived from about 460 B.C. to 377 B.C. He placed medicine on a scientific foundation, freeing it from superstition, philosophy and religious rites, gave sound and shrewd descriptions of many diseases and raised the ethical standards of medical practice. His physiology, pathology and therapeutics were based largely on the doctrines of his predecessors. SOURCE Bulger, R. A dialogue with Hippocrates and Griff T. Ross, M.D. In Bulger R, ed. In Search of the Modern Hippocrates. Iowa City: University of Iowa City Press; 1987:253. OATH “By all that I hold highest, I promise my patients competence, integrity, candor, personal commitment to their best interest, compassion, and absolute discretion, and confidentiality within the law. I shall do by my patients as I would be done by; shall obtain consultation whenever I or they desire; shall include them to the extent they wish in all important decisions; and shall minimize suffering whenever a cure cannot be obtained, understanding that a dignified death is an important goal in everyone’s life. I shall try to establish a friendly relationship with my patients and shall accept each one in a nonjudgmental manner, appreciating the validity and worth of different value systems and according to each person a full measure of human dignity. I shall charge only for my professional services and shall not profit financially in any other way as a result of the advice and care I render my patients. I shall provide advice and encouragement for my patients in their efforts to sustain their own health. I shall work with my profession to improve the quality of medical care and to improve the public health, but I shall not let any lesser public or professional consideration interfere with my primary commitment to provide the best and most appropriate care available to each of my patients. To the extent that I live by these precepts, I shall be a worthy physician.” We are on KOS ISLAND to explore the routes of the History of the Medical School of Hippocrates of Kos.
