TraPac Oakland is excited to announce the recent purchase of two new Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd., marking the arrival of their first-ever ship-to-shore (STS) cranes on the West Coast of the US. These cranes feature a 66-meter (216-foot) outreach, a 53-meter (173.83-foot) lift height, and a lifting capacity of 66 long tonnes in twin-lift mode, delivering exceptional performance for high-capacity handling. On the video our selfdischarging barge Silur is working as a transshipment unit finishing the loading of Panamax vessel OPL (off port limits) in the open sea. To me this is a perfect example of how similar STS (ship to ship) ops should be handled moving forward. Usually for STS operators hire barges or small coasters serving as feeder vessels between shallow draft ports and outer anchorages + floating cranes or geared vessels serving as a transhipment units. Here we offered a solution which combines them both and should decrease costs for the whole operation and that's not even mentioning the fact that we use excavator instead of standard electro-hydraulic cranes which increases the discharging speed 2-3 times. ⏱ See the excavator is making 2 lifts per minute. What is LOLO vessel? Lift-on/lift-off (LoLo) vessels are specialized cargo vessels equipped with on-board cranes designed to efficiently load and unload various types of cargo. Unlike other types of ships that rely on external port infrastructure or equipment for cargo handling, LoLo ships have their own integrated cranes, enabling them to self-manage the loading and unloading operations. These cranes can lift heavy containers, machinery, and other goods from the ship’s deck and safely place them onto the dock or vice versa. Tandem lifting with cranes can be useful for lifting heavy objects or structures that are too large or heavy to be lifted by a single crane. ⚠ When the load is too heavy for a single piece of equipment, two cranes can safely distribute the weight. ⚠ When the load is too long or too wide, two cranes can provide anchor points that stabilize the load and prevent dangerous load swings. The crucial aspect of this type of operation is the simultaneous operation of the two devices. What are the factors to check while using the tandem lifting method? 1. You have to determine the center of gravity of the load before you attempt to lift the load. 2. The cranes' positions matter when lifting a huge load using the tandem method. 3. Sideloading must be avoided during tandem lifting/single lift. 4. Weight distribution is another factor we must consider while performing tandem lifts. 5. Wind speed, ground support, etc 6.
