Collaborating with Biocatalyst Foundation was always an exciting experience! During this Autumn, BioCoderDojo Timișoara joins as a collaborating organization the fantastic SYNBEE consortium advancing synthetic biology in Europe, inviting all those interesting to explore this domain to the Read~Write~Grow Hackathon! We are enthusiastically inviting you to join hundreds of other passionate Europeans for a vibrant biohacking weekend where you can advance towards bringing your ideas to life, creating bold biotechnology solutions to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges! Over two and a half days, you’ll collaborate in teams, receive expert guidance from mentors, and pitch your innovation to a panel of judges from academia, industry, and investors. WHEN: 8th-10th November 2024 WHERE: Zoom TRACKS: ******Industrial + environment: design biotechnological processes for efficient, sustainable, and eco-friendly industrial production of materials and chemicals, as well as environmental sustainability and ecological restoration. ******Agrifood + nutrition: enhance food production and agricultural practices through biotechnology for a more sustainable and nutritious future. ******Medicine + wellbeing: create cutting-edge biotechnological applications that improve treatment, diagnostics, prevention of diseases, as well as overall human wellbeing. ******Moonshots + early bets: propose visionary biotech innovations that push the boundaries of science and technology to tackle present and future global challenges. PRIZES: The top three teams will win vouchers valued at 1500, 1000 and 500 EUR, to purchase essential software, equipment, or tools to advance their project. Two weeks, two hollandbio events 👩🏫💃 Loving the rebrand (kudos, Annemiek Verkamman and team!) which was channeled into the biotech storytelling workshop event on 12th September. Great tips were shared on this day on how to translate biotechnology into relatable narratives, i.e. by creating stories for _people_ ☺️. My main takeaways: 1. Get on the same page: I 🤩😍❤️ geeking out with my fellow scientists and engineers, from all domains of knowledge... but to be understood, we must also 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 - find the middle ground. 2. Normalize biotech: Facts and figures don't work (alone) to persuade people because it is about 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯. Most of us probably don't mean it, but when we talk in our own language, the language of science, we are telling people that we don't care if they understand us or not. The consequence is that biotech becomes something alien, risky, dangerous. Yet biotech products are normal, everyday, everywhere. Having been busy with developing content and other marketing materials, I had been thinking and using a lot of Kahnemann's Thinking Fast and Slow. Validating to see this also applied in the workshop! Sept 19th was a Planet B.ioxhollandbio collab. Let's Talk Bio | Scale-up Event featured not 1, not 2, but 5 talks from pilot facilities available to the Dutch biotech ecosystem. In the talk by Hendrik Waegeman of Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, I was pleasantly surprised by a short highlight on DAB.bio being an example of continuous biomanufacturing - thank you, Hendrik! All in all though, the overall theme seemed to be the importance of downscaling, and having the right processes and infrastructure to get this right. What I love most about what I do: being at the intersection of science and marketability. So many brainiacs are dedicating their skills to solving our problems. The inventions that are being brought to the table (literally) are blowing my mind. But: inventions are not innovations. Ideas are not solutions. Inventions need to be paired with market know-how to create use cases and actual solutions. Then we have an innovation. In order to turn an innovation into a success, what's needed is dash of narrative to make the innovation palatable for consumers. Ag & food are the industry in which the struggle from invention to successful innovation is real. Seafood, neither fished nor farmed, but brewed from cells. Vegetables grown on 6 meter high panels indoors. Food made from carbon in the air. 🤯 While they might sound over-the-top, those are (some) the innovations we need to transition and future-proof our food system. I am delighted that I have the chance to share my view on the pathway from invention to innovation at the TransBIB Learning Lounge. TransBIB is Germany's network of scientific institutions, dedicated to accelerating the industrial bioeconomy. After an introduction by yours truly, Gunnar Mühlstädt (PUEVIT GmbH) and Dr. Cornelius Lahme (BLUU Seafood) will present how they have taken inventions to innovation with their start-ups.
