This week, the EAC Secretariat has convened the 2nd MARKUP II Regional Steering Committee meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, from October 1st to 5th, 2024. Kicking off with visits to thriving Rwandan SMEs—success stories from the first phase of MARKUP—the event brings together regional stakeholders dedicated to amplifying market access for East African products. COPRA, alongside Tanzania’s Ministry of Agriculture, is part of this delegation, actively contributing to critical discussions on enhancing export opportunities for Tanzanian produce. MARKUP II is focused on paving the way for international market access for Tanzanian products like avocado, spices, coffee, packaging, and leather goods. As the authority overseeing Tanzania's avocado value chain and spices sub-sector, COPRA is dedicated to empowering SMEs by establishing robust market systems and fortifying these industries for global trade. By strengthening these value chains, we’re ensuring Tanzanian produce can thrive and compete on the world stage. #COPRA #ShirikishaBoreshaEndeleza #LishaTaifaLishaDunia

While attending the Advancing Food Security in Nairobi City (AFSN) workshop, I came on board solely to document the event... photos, key quotes, content for social, etc.. however five minutes in, I realized I was in completely new territory! The list of vocabulary and technical jargon left me feeling a little out of place. Not a bad thing, because this meant I had a lot to learn about the intricacies of food security and the role informal settlement vendors play. My aha! moment was realizing that even the mama mboga, the njugu seller, and smocha sellers have important roles to play toward advancing food security. These informal vendors provide access to fast- moving food and snack options to communities who often rely on this for their nutrition needs. Did you know a simple meal of chai and andazi can sometimes be the only meal affordable and accesible to communities in the informal settlements? 💥 I look forward to capturing more milestones in the recently launched ''Advancing Food Security in Nairobi County Program'' and learning more about food security in urban informal settlements.

Ever thought of approaches of causing food systems transformation???. Multistakeholder implémentation platform focusing on market system development is a proven approach in pyrethrum value chain in Kenya. over the past few months, I have been involved in coordinating a project employing this approaches. The key lesson learnt, is the synergies drawn from the 3 different partners. The commercial private partner brings onboard the business case and sustainability of the project. The faith based civil society catalysizes the policy advocacy and the INGO manages the grants. The results are enormous. It's a model worth exploring.

Thank you, Lee-Anne, for addressing the key challenge of the lack of comprehensive disaster response assessments. This has been a longstanding issue that has either not been voiced effectively or, though it was amplified and documented, the issue has not been adequately addressed. If, there needs to funding for resources to tackle this problem. However, the approach must be systematic and sound effective to ensure real impact on the whole database on distaster response and recovery is addressed. Building a robust database for disaster management, including first aid response and long-term recovery, will be crucial in strengthening Vanuatu’s resilience and enhancing its disaster response practices. A strong, well-organized system will contribute significantly to nation-building and improving resilience.
“Cyclone Pam took out about 86% of the GDP of Vanuatu. We have had 5 cyclones that have taken out over 50% of our GDP in the last 5 years. It's gotten so bad that the government doesn't carry out disaster assessments any more because they don't have resources to do so.” Lee-Anne Maria Sackett, lead consultant to @VanuatuUN on legal affairs, highlights how #LossAndDamage caused by topical cyclones in Vanuatu have pushed the small island nation to seek #ClimateJustice via additional avenues to the UNFCCC including via the International Court of Justice (ICJ). 🥳This morning La Ruta del Clima, Brot für die Welt, The Government of Vanuatu, Oxfam, and ROSA-LUXEMBOURG-STIFTUNG New York Office held the #ClimateWeekNYC event "#ClimateReparations: #Justice to Repair the Harm". 🔗Find out more about the speakers here: https://lnkd.in/eivjFns9
