⚜️Epidermolysis bullosa (ep-ih-dur-MOL-uh-sis buhl-LOE-sah) is a rare condition that results in fragile, blistering epidermis. Blisters may develop as a result of minor injuries, such as heat, rubbing, or clawing. Blisters may develop within the body, including the lining of the pharynx or stomach, in severe cases. ⚜️Epidermolysis bullosa is inheritable and typically manifests in neonates or young children. Symptoms may not manifest in certain individuals until they are adolescents or young adults. ⚜️There is currently no cure for epidermolysis bullosa; however, milder forms may improve with age. The primary objective of treatment is to address ulcers and prevent the development of new ones. Let’s Talk About It: Patient Advocates' Role in Reducing Stigma Patient advocates play a crucial role in reducing the #stigma surrounding sensitive health conditions by fostering open conversations and promoting awareness. Through sharing personal stories, advocating for education, and challenging misconceptions, they contribute to normalizing discussions around health issues that are often stigmatized. 💬 By humanizing these conditions and emphasizing the commonality of health challenges, patient advocates create an environment where individuals feel empowered to speak openly about their experiences, ultimately breaking down barriers and fostering greater understanding and empathy. 🥰 As an ulcerative colitis patient and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) patient advocate, I’ve joked that I’ve built my advocacy career on talking about poop, but it’s true! It’s only when we talk openly about these kinds of conditions and symptoms that the greater public doesn’t just see illnesses like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) as a “poop disease” and can be receptive to learning about how significantly the multi-systemic disease can impact patients’ physical and mental health as well as their overall quality of life. 😌 ❓Have you felt unable to speak openly about something health-related due to perceived societal stigma? 😔 💬 ⬇️ #healthadvocacy #healthcare #patientadvocacy #breakthestigma #dialogue #patientempowerment
