World Wildlife Day is a global observance dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about the World's wild animals and plants. Wildlife contributes to ecological balance, provides essential services such as pollination and pest control, and offers potential sources of medicine and genetic resources. However, many species are facing unprecedented threats due to habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and illegal wildlife trade. Currently, there are more than 𝟭𝟱𝟳,𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 on The ICUN Red List (Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species). The Red Panda, Sumatran Elephant, Hawksbill Turtle, Polar Bear, Orangutan, Amur Leopard, Blue Whale and the White Rhino are just some of the beautiful creatures that are on that list. On this World Wildlife Day, let's commit to supporting conservation efforts, advocating for stronger wildlife protection laws, and adopting sustainable practices in our daily lives. Meet the Spotted Pardalote, one of Australia's smallest but most striking birds.🐦 Despite its small size, the Spotted Pardalote (Pardalotus punctatus) plays a significant role in our ecosystem by helping regulate insect populations, particularly psyllids and lerp-making insects. With its speckled crown, vibrant yellow throat and soft calls, this tiny bird is a frequent visitor to the landscapes of Greenfleet’s forests. They typically inhabit the canopy of tall eucalypts, where the dense foliage offers an ideal habitat, and find perfect nesting and foraging grounds across our Wurneet Laang Laang, Bromfields Road, Mount Emily, and Territory forests in Victoria's South Gippsland. Since 1997, Greenfleet has restored almost 11,000 hectares of native forests. Today is World Wildlife Day! Let's take a moment to think about our amazing wildlife and how important it is to protect them. Did you know there are about 8.7 million different species on Earth? But sadly, many of them are in danger of disappearing forever. According to the latest data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), more than 44,000 species are categorized into 9 risk levels, signaling their vulnerability to extinction. As we strive to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 15, it becomes increasingly crucial for us to take decisive action to preserve these species and their habitats. In line with this imperative, a recent lecture was organized for the MA Sustainable Development Practices class, featuring Dr. Gaurav Barhodiya, an esteemed Assistant Professor from Delhi University. During this enlightening session, students engaged with Dr. Barhodiya to deepen their understanding of wildlife trafficking in India and the escalating threats faced by endangered species such as tortoises, snakes, pangolins, rhinos, and elephants. The surge in market demand for their shells, skins, horns, or tusks has only exacerbated these challenges. Dr. Barhodiya's insights have inspired us to actively participate in conservation initiatives and make informed choices that promote the well-being of animals and their habitats. Yesterday the first-ever State of the World’s Migratory Species report was launched by Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) at #CMSCOP14. This landmark report shockingly reveals that while some #migratoryspecies listed under CMS are improving, nearly half (44 per cent) are showing population declines. We need collective and robust conservation action which the Wildlife Works Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project has been a pioneer of for nearly two decades protecting over 200,000 hectares of Kenya's dryland forest. Migratory species including African wild dogs, Grevy's zebras, Cheetahs, Lions and African elephants are thriving in this vital wildlife corridor. 📽 One of the majestic African elephants 🐘 captured on a recent project visit. As the largest land mammal on the planet, these magnificent animals stand at three meters tall and weigh up to six tonnes. African elephants migrate through 37 countries within the African continent, consuming huge amounts of grasses, bark and fruit. 🌍 Alarming New Report: A 73% Drop in Wildlife Populations 🐾 Since 1970, vertebrate animal populations have plummeted by 73%! Whether on land, in the sea, or along our rivers, wildlife is vanishing at an alarming rate. 😞 📊 The latest report from the World Wildlife Fund and the Zoological Society of London looked at 5,495 species, and the numbers are shocking: 🦎 Lizards have dropped from 10,000 to just 2,700 in some areas. 🐦 Birds once filling the skies have declined from 30,000 to 8,100. 🐠 Freshwater species are suffering the most, even more than marine and land animals. 🌎 Latin America and the Caribbean have been hit hardest by these declines, but there’s a bit of hope for North America. Thanks to conservation efforts, our biodiversity loss is at 39%, lower than other regions. But that’s still a major warning sign! 🚨 💡 What can we do? ✔️ Protect wildlife corridors so animals can roam freely. ✔️ Put more biologists on the ground through funding for state wildlife action plans. ✔️ Remove dams to save freshwater species like salmon. ✔️ Protect old-growth forests — they’re more vital than we thought. ✔️ Support the Endangered Species Act — we must protect it from attacks in Congress! 🌲 The time to act is NOW. If we don’t step up, we risk losing more species, more habitats, and the delicate balance of our ecosystems. We’re halfway to a tipping point, but we still have time to turn it around. Enjoy watching them from a distance to avoid causing stress during their migration. 2. **Hands Off, Please:** Resist the urge to handle newts. Touching them can transfer oils and chemicals from your skin, potentially harming them. Let them navigate their journey undisturbed. 3. **Roadside Assistance:** If you spot newts crossing roads, lend a helping hand without direct contact. Gently guide them in the direction they're headed, ensuring a safe passage to their destination. 4. **Educate Others:** Spread awareness about the importance of protecting newts and their habitats. What do small-flowered snottygobble, waddy-wood, tangled wattle, regent honeyeater, night parrot and princess parrot all have in common? They are all priority species under the Threatened Species Action Plan 2022–2032, and they are all impacted by rabbits! Rabbits hold the number 1 spot among invasive species in Australia by impacting the greatest number of our precious threatened species. They: 🐰 devour seedlings and saplings 🐰 degrade land 🐰 compete for food 🐰 enable the increase of invasive predators 🐰 worsen the impact on native fauna. CSIRO is conducting a survey to identify the research, management and other actions needed to ensure the long-term maintenance of native species and ecological communities affected by rabbits. Since the 1980s, the combined populations of river dolphin species have plummeted by 73%. With the Global Declaration for River Dolphins, 14 countries (six of them in Latin America) are expected to join forces to protect the six surviving species of this aquatic mammal that inhabit the world’s rivers and are under some category of threat. So far, nine of the governments involved have signed the declaration. The declaration comes at a critical moment for these animals. Don't let this photo be the last way children can see wild tigers. But with only 4,500 remaining, this future might be closer than you think. Tigers are integral to our story. As apex carnivores, tigers serve as keystone species, controlling prey populations, which aids nutrient cycling and helps stop disease spread, benefitting human communities. They are also indicator species — when tiger populations are healthy, their ecosystems are likely healthy, too. In fact, tiger landscapes in Asia supply water to an astonishing 800 million people. But this iconic species is sadly listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List for a reason. Rampant poaching, habitat loss, prey depletion and human-cat conflict threaten to push tigers closer to extinction. In Thailand, Panthera and partners study tiger ecology and monitor prey species to inform conservation action. Panthera also supports Malaysia’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) and indigenous Orang Asli community members to prevent tiger poaching with patrols on peninsular Malaysia.
