"The Great Detachment" It's the next "Great" big thing. 2023 was a year of record profits for corporations. 2023 was also a record year for layoffs. It's a chicken/egg scenario, or could be. You might lay off people as a cheater's way to make your profit target. Or you could turn it around and say, "If we had record profits, why do we need to go for the layoff record?" My suspicion is that it's the former and not the latter. It's a reactive (and yes, lazy) way to get to end of job after several quarters of taking your eye of the productivity ball, but you do what you have to when you forgot to manage. But here's the kicker, all that reactive management leads to stuff like this. Great things like the Great Detachment are lagging indicators of poor leadership. The article (link in the comments) points out that the Great Detachment coincides with "significant declines in two critical elements of employee engagement: clarity of expectations at work and feeling connected to the company’s mission and purpose". Unclear expectations and disconnection from the mission and vision are directly related to a lack of connection between employees and managers. Here are a couple of things suggested by the article (incidentally, these are the exact things I help my clients resolve, just sayin'): 1. Reset Expectations and Priorities The primary way to do this is to measure what matters starting with productivity and then feedback how people are doing frequently. 2. Connect Individual Contributions to Mission and Purpose When I know how what I do relates to what WE do, I'm automagically more engaged. We often lose sight of the most critical resource: our people. The Great Detachment isn't inevitable—it’s preventable. By focusing on clear expectations and connecting work to purpose, we can turn disengagement into a renewed sense of alignment and productivity. Great leadership is proactive, not reactive. Let’s lead better, together. #LeadershipMatters #EmployeeEngagement #GreatDetachment #PeopleFirst #FutureOfWork #ManagerTraining #PurposeDrivenLeadership #CorporateCulture #TeamAlignment #LeadershipDevelopment

At thrively, we pride ourselves on our commitment to partnership, integrity, and doing what’s best for our clients and candidates. Recently, we had the opportunity to pass through an exceptional C-level candidate, a remarkable leader, to one of our clients—entirely free of charge. This decision wasn’t about making a deal; it was about believing in the power of connection and the importance of doing right by the people and organizations we serve. We knew that this candidate could make a profound impact on the client’s growth and success, and we couldn’t let the opportunity slip by just because it didn’t fit into a typical business transaction. In a world where business decisions are often driven by numbers, it’s important to remember that relationships and trust are what truly drive success. We are here to build long-term partnerships, where doing the right thing isn’t just an option—it’s our standard. This isn’t just about filling roles. It’s about making meaningful connections that elevate both the organizations we serve and the incredible talent we represent. And sometimes, that means going above and beyond because it’s simply the right thing to do. So, here's to putting good vibes out into the universe and doing the right thing. #Leadership #Integrity #Partnership #HR #Thrively #HighThrive

Today I celebrate my 1 year anniversary at Talent Strategy! The decision I made was tough in the beginning because of all the unknowns, but it was definitely worth it! Talent Strategy is the most supportive company I have ever worked for. I came over with large goals and they support me and give me the tools to follow through and reach my goals. The only thing I regret is not finding them sooner! #1yearanniversary #TalentStrategy #Recruiting

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿! If I had a dollar for every time a client asked for this (often with a proviso that they should also be affordable) I'd have retired years ago! But are these superstars even worth it? According to the article by Matthew Call from the Texas A&M University, "The answer is yes, our research shows—but only if leaders understand that the kind of value superstars bring to the company changes as the star’s career evolves." Interestingly, their research showed that young stars were often underpaid relative to their contribution. So maybe it is possible to have your cake and eat it, after all?! In a nutshell, the key is to enable the transition from being an individual contributor to being a team player. As their careers progress, they need to become collaborators and mentors, and helping the team succeed. As our work with Anand Vengurlekar, an expert in Innovation and Design Thinking has shown, aligning a team towards a common mission has a far greater impact than simply filling the team with a bunch of superstars. Have you hired any superstars? Hows that worked out for you?

💥 It’s going to take more than the annual holiday party to keep your employees engaged! 💼 What the Numbers Tell Us: 52% of employees are actively considering or already seeking a new job. Only 23% of employees strongly agree they trust their organization’s leadership. Perhaps the amount of layoffs in 2023 & 2024 have played a part? 90% of companies list retention as a top priority, but many don’t budget for L&D initiatives to equip managers. The Result: —> Many organizations will lose top talent in 2025 and rightfully so. Is it possible for organizations to focus both on people and profitability?
