A startling 57 percent of people in the LGBTQ+ community have reported that they or an LGBTQ+ loved one has been threatened or have experienced harassment and a trailing 51 percent have experienced violence due to their sexual or gender identity. While sheer statistics cannot encapsulate the social pressures that the LGBTQ+ community experiences, they certainly do speak to the multiple variables that can exacerbate emotional distress for youth in the LGBTQ+ community. To combat this issue, the first step is awareness. In our latest episode of Fostering Voices, we're having essential conversation about the role we all play—parents, caregivers, and community members—in supporting the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ youth with the one•n•ten team. one•n•ten is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving LGBTQ+ youth and young adults ages 11-24. They provide critical services that promote self-expression, self-acceptance, leadership development, and healthy life choices. Let’s explore how we can all play a part in creating a more supportive, inclusive world for the LGBTQ+ youth in our lives. Statistically, more than one in five Gen Z adults and one in ten millennial adults identify as LGBTQ+. Youth who identify as LGBTQ+ are at a significantly higher risk for homelessness, substance abuse, trauma, and suicide, with even greater risks for those who’ve experienced the foster care system. These youth could be our neighbors, friends, children, or our kids’ friends, making it crucial for us to put down our guard and open our hearts. Even if you don’t feel this is directly relevant to your life, we encourage you to listen here.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we uplift the work of LGBTQ+ researchers affiliated with Syracuse University and their project aiming to understand the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals living in New York, including their trauma exposure, mental health, and substance use. The researchers will ask LGBTQ+ people how trauma and other stressful experiences impacted their lives. Prospective participants will be asked to first complete a brief (5 min.) online survey containing demographic information (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender identity) and questions about stressful experiences. The survey is live here: https://lnkd.in/gDGUKPb9
