Just Published | New study led by Menzies PhD student Sarah Cassidy-Seyoum highlights improved strategies are needed to ensure access to radical cure for vivax malaria. Plasmodium vivax remains a significant challenge for malaria elimination due to its dormant liver stages, which can reactivate after initial infection. The study found that current strategies only provide access to adequate treatment for half of the vivax patients because of low referral rates. To improve access to radical cure treatments for vivax malaria improvements in infrastructure and income security are needed. In the short term bringing treatment closer to patients, and equipping community health workers with G6PD tests for effective curative treatment is crucial. Read the full study here - bit.ly/3y6NdWL

"While international public health efforts have cut global TB case rates by a quarter and death rates by half since 2000, it is still the world’s No. 1 infectious-disease killer. TB claims more than one million lives annually. There are new advances in screening, prevention and treatment, however, that now make dramatic progress possible — if we tap them. Success requires everyone pitching in." Dr. Atul Gawande describes how innovations and progress can help the global fight against tuberculosis. #endtb #tuberculosis #infectiousdisease #publichealth #commitment https://lnkd.in/eWMMgheD?

How is TB Still Taking Lives? My grandfather’s entire immediate family was lost to tuberculosis when he was a child—he was the only one to survive. Nearly a century later, as TB claims over a million lives each year, it begs the question: Why are we still here? In 2023, the numbers are staggering. A record 8.2 million people were newly diagnosed, and 400,000 of those cases involve multidrug-resistant TB. This isn’t just any disease; it’s one we know how to treat and prevent. And yet, drug-resistant strains are rising, adding layers of complexity and urgency to an already deadly problem. So, why, almost 100 years later, are families still being torn apart by TB? The tools are there, but the reality is brutal: more than half of TB-affected households face catastrophic costs just for diagnosis and treatment. For many, accessing TB care means risking food, housing, or daily essentials—choices no one should have to make. In the West, TB outbreaks in countries like India and Indonesia might feel distant. But as the disease spreads, so does its resistance to treatments we once thought reliable. We talk about the “next pandemic”—the question is, will it be MDR-TB? #TB #GlobalHealth #DrugResistance #Pandemic

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad emphasizes the ongoing concern of tuberculosis (TB), with 8,856 cases reported nationwide, including 1,944 in Sabah. Early detection and treatment are crucial, as TB is highly infectious. Misconceptions, such as attributing it to 'santau' (black magic), need correction. Additionally, the Ministry aims for zero new local leprosy cases by 2030, with targeted efforts underway. Updates on healthcare projects, including clinic upgrades in Sabah, highlight ongoing commitments to public health. Let's raise awareness and prioritize healthcare access for all. #PublicHealth #TBawareness #HealthcareInitiatives https://lnkd.in/gNbhYRaQ
